Post-metal as a genre is thing of the past.

It nearly is, at least. Rosetta distanced themselves from metal incrementally and now are basically a post rock band. Isis broke up. We still have the almighty Cult of Luna, thank satan.

I need to hear this, just reminding myself. Are Russian Circles still post-metal-ish? I've only heard their first 2 records. And CoL are excellent, that's another band I need to explore further.

CoL is pretty good, but not better than Isis or Neurosis for example. TGS is what i call heavier side of post-metal. This album is a heavy hitter, no matter what type of music you listened to prior, even counts for death metal or black metal. This album should be a cathartic experience if properly listened to. Interesting enough, it's the only Rosetta's album that is so heavy.

I really dig Neurosis, Isis are cool but I've not connected with the one album I listen to (Panopticon) quite the same. I love Somewhere Along the Highway by CoL.

One of the best albums I've ever heard. Make sure you first timers listen to the combined version for the full experience : )

"Combined is pretty much essential"

I still prefer disc 1 alone, but sometimes I want my mind blown in half, sure.

"Are Russian Circles still post-metallish?"

Every album is darker and heavier. I still maintain that they are unskippable in a live setting, but their albums are a nice trip every once in a while.

Regarding CoL: Galilean, Wake/Lift and MAAAYBBBEE Determinism are pretty much the only albums that I might take over the bulk of CoLs discog. I love me some Isis, but these two bands did it better if you ask me. Fighting words, I know.

Yep. Maybe they will save this year of underwhelming records.

Here's hoping. I was bored to death by their last release though. I'm afraid they'll never be the band I want them to be again. Which is fine, as long as they're happy. But man, I miss this shit.
