No Care and the closer are great but the rest just goes in one ear and out the other for the most part, not bad mostly but not very impressive either.

"lacks excitement" is pretty subjective.

I didn't love it the first time I listened (it's too cold a record to do that), but I gave it a week to settle in. Revisited last night and enjoyed it a lot more.

I love how bitter this album can be sometimes. Numbers, No Care and Alone / With You are highlights almost solely for Elena's fed up demeanor.

Fossa and No Care are really cool.

I see what Fantano is saying. I really dig this album, but the first half is really slow, especially How and Mothers. But then the second half happens and suddenly they kick it up a notch.
I feel like this is just a prelude to what will hopefully be a masterpiece next time around (see: Everything Everything with Arc and Get To Heaven)

I think its probably a good thing that the music 'lacks excitement' (I don't agree, but devil's advocate...); Daughter's lyrics are generally based around numbness and disillusionment. It wouldn't fit if they were all set to Ibiza party bangers...

still havent listened to the whole album yet, but based on what i have heard, im surprised this has a lower average rating than If You Leave.

Yeah, I much prefer this to If You Leave, but I can see a lot of people finding it quite average. It's depressingly beautiful, but I found it wearing off me pretty fast after I got over the lyrics and some of the vocal performances. I still love it and it's great, but I'm not too surprised.

This gets better the more I hear it. Really worth the effort to get into it.
Thankfully the middle of the album had the Alone/With You/No Care double hit to make me interested enough to come back and let the rest grow on me.

Agreed, this is growing on me.

There are a few tracks on here that are just stellar. I'm particularly loving New Ways and Numbers, but 'How' is a standout for sure. The intro with the reverb/echo laced guitar is just fantastic.
I hear the moments that are 'beautifully depressing' that everyone speaks about here but there are a good amount of moments of clarity on this album too; 'sun breaking through the clouds' type moments that make everything so much more enjoyable to listen to. It's seemingly not all doom & gloom.
