the only thing people should compare this to is their debut, which imo this is much better

ITS MY LIFE

Probably my favourite TT album, even if the later albums are better in virtually every way. Weird how that works.

it's almost as though the enjoyment of music were subjective

All of their albums are different enough that it isn’t surprising to choose any of them as a favorite. Except their first album. Fuck that album.

I feel like I'd probably end up liking this more than their post-rock shit.

Taking another crack at this after a while. Trying to find some gems in here after becoming so familiar with the following three albums.
Alright Dum Dum Girl, Such a Shame, Renée, Tomorrow Started, and Does Caroline Know? are really good.
Album is solid but obviously they didn’t become the greatest band ever until starting with the next one.

Definitely some songs on here that I’ve played tons more than anything from their last two records

A typical 1984 synthpop / new wave album that's why I like it. I love that late 1983 / 1984 electronic sound that many bands and artists had back then (like Alphaville, Talk Talk, Real Life, Howard Jones, Nik Kershaw, Paul Young, The Stranglers, Thompson Twins, Blancmange, OMD, Nena ("? Fragezeichen" album), Cyndi Lauper, Icehouse etc, even Udo Lindenberg had that with his album "Götterhämmerung").
I hardly ever listen top pop music anymore but somehow I'm just obsessed with 1984 and late 1983, not only the synthpop / new wave music, but also some of our german tv shows from that time.
I love that atmosphere that the synthesizers and keyboard from that time create, it teleports me to mid 1984 in my mind.
I also love the "Zoolook" album by Jean Michel Jarre from 1984 and David Sylvian's "Brilliant Trees", both of course a bit different but still have that mid 80's feel.
