Paul is alive does rule, even if one of the vocal melodies comes straight from hey there delilah.

As a big fan of The National I enjoyed this album very much. I'm not too familiar with Brent Knopf but the collaboration of these two is outstanding and a fun listen. This is by far one of my favorite albums recently released, it's the perfect mix musically and lyrically, it's a 4.5 for me.
Good review by the way

You thinking about reviewing this Sowing? It would probably get more of the attention that it deserves, I'm guessing most of the users on this site bumping National threads every other day probably don't even know this exists.

Wanted to review it back when it came out but didn't have the time
Probably won't get around to it now either, seeing as there are other not-new-releases higher on my to do list
Still, this needs more exposure. IMO about half of this holds up to any National material.

Wow. No. I mean it's fine if you're trying to give it more exposure but this LP (imo) can't hold a candle to any post Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers The National material. I guess you could cherry pick the strongest songs from here and they would be better than "Fireproof" but that's about it. This is completely lacking on the emotional side of things which has always been one of the strongest traits of Berningers songwriting. Also the lyrics are frequently terrible which is a new thing in his discography. The production job by the Menomena Guy is actually pretty good for the most part and some of the songs are decent. (Lead single for example) but overall this was highly disappointing and felt like a filler project to me.

Agree with Ed, this isn't close to National standard

i'd say the quality of the best stuff here is the quality of average to slightly above average stuff by the national, though the only song that even remotely reminds me of the national is no time to crank the sun
this is holding up for me, i've listened to it probably 15 times and it's still as good as it was at first, i love this album

the first three and No Time to Crank the Sun are the only ones i find myself coming back to on here. the rest are passable but eh.

agreed those are the best even though Crank the Sun is pretty much a TWFM b-side. I'm the Man to Be is one of my favourite Berninger tunes

that stripped down version of Crank the Sun they did live is way superior to the one on the album though.

Agreed that this is painfully frontloaded. Happiness, Missouri rules too though.
