"always thought this band would eventually get massive, i was mistaken"

Oh well Mort, we all have to be wrong at least once.

Not massive for sure, but I personally enjoyed all of their records to a certain extent.

On their more electronic records I 100% agree with Davey that the songs often fail to go anywhere and substitute traditional yet satisfying song structures with Smith taking on a challenge "How Many Times Can I Repeat That Refrain?"

Thanks guys. And yes, Smith does like his repetitive refrains. It's hard not to think that it's at least partially due to the fact that he has a commanding voice.

This has actually grown on me over the week, surprised it's not getting more attention.

As for the whole backtracking on a backtrack thing in the review, I think the band's "making of" video explains this: TWOYL was a "safe" album for them to learn to work with Justin and Elliot, and this one is what they REALLY wanted to make.

I'm not susprised, because it's not totally devoid of nagging melodies. But many people don't stick around long enough to let that occur.

That explanation is fair enough from the band's p.o.v, but they also have to step into the shoes of listeners/fans, who - one way or another - would have been lost along the way.

Good tunes. Review is a little harsh and presupposes that the band owes you.

The band don't owe me, or anyone else for that matter. They can definitely make the music that they want to make.

But if you split your audience predominantly in two and then keep flip-flopping between those 2 groups, people will just naturally react with indifference.

Thanks Snide. I presume you liked them somewhere along the way... & they lost you as well?

Well, they started out pretty good on their first two LPs, but never really progressed from there. It's as if all popular 00's indierockbands have been moving into the wrong direction. Arctic Monkeys, The Strokes, Editors etc. I didn't really like ITL&OTE, especially Papillon, but this album is even worse. Wasn't really any memorable moment at all. I saw them live yesterday and the new tracks may even sound worse on stage. Only Marching Only was enjoyable. I like your review though, I can sense your confusion in it and that's very understandable imo.

Well summed up. Hopefully, the older songs still sound good live.

This has been growing on me. Lots of weak moments, but "No Harm", "Ocean of Night", "Life Is A Fear", and "Marching Orders" are among Editors' best songs.

I agree that a few tracks do grow on you - hence our similar ratings... But I wouldn't say any of those tunes are amongst their best songs.

Marching Orders is definitely one of their best tracks. The build up is immense

They ended on Marching Orders as their encore after Papillon at Leeds on their latest tour last month - what a piss poor move; they went from 100 to 0 on the hype-meter.

It's a good song, but it's so plodding and slow

That was the 2nd best track here imo... if only by near default.

This is not a bad album. Certainly better than In This Light and on This Evening. Different from their last one, more subdued. Still not hitting the highs of the first 2 albums though.
