Better than Sunbather from what I've heard, definitely not as dull.

Oh sweet a feature :]
Thanks zaru!
Sunbather is way better than this IMO
|
| |
yeah, leagues ahead of this.
and grats on the feature. just took the time to read it now. i like your concluding paragraph.
i think what sunbather did for the genre was very innovative, marrying black metal with post-rock and shoegaze and alt elements. this seems to lose that musical identity and opt for more of a metal sound, which, you know, good for them for not making the same album twice, but it adheres more to genre conventions as a result. sunbather still sounds fresh to me to this day.
btw: you have a few typos throughout your review, like here:
" it's frustrating to think how much better this album could of been"

Yeah, apart from Dream House it bored the tits off me.

Thanks Matt. I'll take a second to fix that one, and any others.
I completely agree with you about this and sunbather. It still sounds exciting everytime i listen to it.

I've given this a mostly cursory listen, but the feeling I get is that this album will be forgotten quickly. Wonder if Deafheaven will bring elements they messed with on this record to their next one in a less disjointed fashion

Listened this album half paying attention to it and it was aight. Will give it a more in-depth listen soon.

np spirit. oh and the typo i was pointing out (just in case it wasn't clear) was that it should be 'could have' instead of 'could of'

sunbather did about 0 innovative things for black metal.

this is obvious
however, it did bring blackgaze into a sphere of popularity it hadnt seen before

you don't need to be innovative to be hugely important, though. Sunbather culminated post-black like it hadn't been before and did so in a way that opened up the genre to exponentially more people than before.

agreed on the popularity and "opening up" points, but saying it "culminated" post-black implies something about its quality that i can't really see. the style had been done better by other bands for many years.

really only Alcest and Agalloch did black metal + post-rock in a way that anyone gave a damn about pre-Judah, though (and Woods of Desolation but that was the same year as judah so it only kind of counts). There were a few obscure bands out there but really nothing significant.
also wooo 10K comments yay.

This and Sunbather are more of the same to me. Roads to Judah is probably their best.
