what if you can't hear shit though, surely that takes away from the experience? how am i supposed to enjoy an album when i can't even hear what would make me enjoy it in the first place?

I guess it's just me, but I never have any trouble hearing anything going on in an album. No matter how busy the production is, or rangeless. But I guess that's because my ears are trained on stuff like Brodequin and Embodied Torment.
When you play a song back in your head, or a riff, the production isn't there. Just the music. They are in no way equally important to me. I assume you don't listen to much older music.

thankfully most older music doesn't suffer from some of the production issues a lot of modern music does and so i don't need to use my imagination to fill in the gaps
it's not just about hearing certain sounds or not though. the production actually changes how an album sounds so idk how you can ignore it. like snox mentioned, if Goatlord for example had Fallujah production it would almost be an entirely different album :/

Disagree completely.
And older music does suffer a lot of "production issues." The technology wasn't nearly as advanced is it is now, especially in the Mono era.

It's funny, you put quotes around those words, but I never said them or anything similar. I stated that I listen to the most brutal / busy productions out there, so yes my ears are more trained to chaos or obscured production. That's a simple fact. I never said that made me more advanced in any way. Don't be so insecure.
That's cool that production and studio wizardry matters so much to you. Like I said, it doesn't to me, and the music is most important. End of discussion for me.

okay let's say the guitars on a death metal album are buried in the mix and an unintentionally distorted and clipping snare drum is at the forefront of the mix to the point where it's hard to tune out. furthermore the guitars are compressed and sound like hissing rather than distorted guitar riffs. are you saying that won't affect your enjoyment of said album at all?

"That's cool that production and studio wizardry matters so much to you"
way to miss his point while being patronizing

When did I say that listening to older music makes someone a more advanced human? You are being very insecure. I never made any such statements. Am I wrong in my assumption, or not? Because if I'm right, then there's nothing wrong with me making that assumption.
You can't tell me how I enjoy an album, lol. And quoting only half of a sentence isn't going to lend credence to your argument. I said my ears are trained on bands that are reviled for having "shitty production," as an example of how I don't care about production, just the music.
|
| |
oh my god this is dumb. of course production effects how enjoyable an album is. you're point about older music is completely invalid within this discussion as we are mainly discussing how digital production techniques have led to a lot of things sounding sterile and a lot of metal bands sounding the same.
|
| |
it's fine if you can endure horrible digital production and see past it to further enjoy the music, however your justifications for said feelings are completely invalid.

Production affects how enjoyable an album is... to you. This guy is trying to tell me that I care about production when I don't. How am I even remotely wrong in this argument, when my enjoyment of music is the centerpiece of his argument? Something only I have knowledge of.

I'm acting superior when you are telling me that I don't actually enjoy music more than production. Okay, guys.
Was my assumption correct or not?
I literally even said "that's cool that production is important to you," and you interpreted that as me being a dick. How is anything dick-ish about that statement? Because you're used to people being sarcastic? That's not my fault, and I was not being sarcastic.

you missed the point he made that bad production isn't just lo-fi production (which i'm assuming the bands you are mentioning employ). besides, we were talking about fallujah's album which is on the complete opposite of the production spectrum to the lo-fi murky stuff. it's great that you trained your ears to look past that, but not everyone is willing to endure all of that, and thus it affects their enjoyment of the music
|
| |
i just think trying to say that you can endure this digitalised music because of your experience with some busy extreme metal production is redundant

I'm not speaking exclusively about murky production. I said that as a pivot point for your understanding of the kind of music that usually reaches my ears. Jesus Christ, you guys. I don't even know what you're arguing about anymore.

"Anyone who says that production doesn't have any affect on the music is kidding themselves. I'd say it's likely you're LESS "trained" in understanding production values if you make statements like this, to be honest."
A full quote from you. Yes, you are saying that. You are saying that I'm kidding myself, because I've made this statement. But I'm the one acting superior? My argument is that poor production, in any manifestation, does not hamper my enjoyment of the music, because the music is all that matters to me; that's all that lasts.

how about just print out the note transcription sheets of the albums, play it in your head and call it a day then. what's the point of even listening to it

Notice I've never misquoted you guys, or put words in your mouth once. You can interpret all the insults that you want, or say I'm being "superior," but I've never been anything but respectful toward you. At the end of the day you all are picking and choosing fragments of what I'm saying, and telling me that is the centerpiece of some grand argument we are having, while completely ignoring what I'm actually trying to tell you.
Are you insulted because I don't feel the same way as you do? I've already accepted that you like production a lot. I told you that's great. You keep jumping down my throat, for even saying that. There's no appeasing you.
