This is definitely better than The Final Frontier. The only weaker thing here is Tears of a Clown.

Yeah but Bruce Dickinson loved Robin Williams so Tears of a Clown was going to stay in the album. It is too long overall, however. But way better than The Final Frontier, as mentioned above. Empire of the Clouds is one of Maiden's top 10 standalone tracks of all time.

Actually... the theme for 'Empire of the Clouds' is the opposite of overblown ;)

Also, thx for the reminder. I might lower down my rating for TFF lol
Haven't listened to it in ages though, so will have to do that. Its t/t is amazing though

yeah agreed sirlord, both records are no better than a 3
and yes, the final frontier portion of the opening track is stellar

First half of this is really great and honestly if that was the whole album that might have been better (maybe with Empire coming right after the t/t). Empire of The Clouds has some awesome moments but it isn't very engaging.
I feel like they have one last album in them.

Well, finished my binge yesterday, that was quite the trip, but I must admit, the trek after Brave New World left me with nothing. Overlong tracks with yeah, some stellar moments, but nothing that comes close to early Maiden.
So yep, conclusion, maybe stating the obvious, but early maiden = best maiden.
Fin.

Early Maiden rules everything but, knowing your taste, I assure you that one day you'll love their post-BNW stuff as well. Just when you want to jam something else apart from their '80s stuff, you'll start loving tracks like Dance of Death, Paschendale, For the Greater Good of God, When the Wild Wind Blows, etc.

It may be I was saturated by the end of the run manosg, but that combined to the length of the tracks really wasn't helping. I mean, Empire of the Clouds was 18 minutes and had a piano.
A piano.
In a Maiden album ;/

It's very natural, man. When you go on a binge, it's hard to deal with longer tracks towards the end of the binge. Yeah, I dig Empire of the Clouds but never felt that it is the masterpiece that some dudes claim it is. Lately though, I've been jamming their post-2K albums more and more. Actually, I wish they had released a live with post-2K material only haha.

nothing will ever top 80's Maiden when it comes to heavy metal for me
i do enjoy their 2000 onward material too, more so than almost any other band that has been doing it as long as they have
hell, i'll take 3.5 - 4.0 out of these guys the rest of the way

a matter is my fav of the last 3
