The band is young, but most of the members are old. I think that may lead them to getting softer earlier in their band life

They're not old. Also, being old means nothing. We all saw what Iron Maiden did this year!
However, you have a point. How come they are in their mid 40's or more and they've been playing music only for the past ten years? Were they in an other band before?

I meant they're on the older side. Bands with young members tend to have a more energetic approach. Not saying that the guys in Riverside aren't capable of that energy, but that they prefer to go mellower.
@Myth: Piotr K was in Hate before Riverside. Don't think the other guys were in proper bands before. Iron Maiden were a metal band from the very beginning, of course they're going to be aggressive, the fans would be disappointed otherwise.

Sweet album but the music is overly stripped, drumming is generic and these are the results of hanging out too much with Steven Wilson.

Riverside's power is in the constant changes between harsh,heavy and strong parts and mellower, more subtle and peaceful ones.
The abssense of this basic element makes the new album sound so flat.
