"listened to this a good 8 times now and never once has cheesiness popped in to my mind"

Don't know how that's possible, there's definitely cheese here.

What's a heavy metal album without cheese anyway.

Also, I've gotta say, I thought Tears of a Clown was borderline dreadful.

All 'epic' metal is cheesy, you've obviously become immune.

I didn't say cheesy was a bad thing or that I like it any less because of that. My opinion on this topic hasn't changed at all.

Back to this, that chorus in If Eternity Should Fail is classic Maiden.

Tears of a Clown is definitely the worst song on the album.

Hang on. Time to face facts, metal is total cheese. All of it is head to toe cheese, that's part of its charm for me now and why I thought it was bobbins when I was an angsty teen.

Cheese is life. I'd hate it if music was all about cynicism and seriousness.

"Tears of a Clown is definitely the worst song on the album."

Glad I'm not the only one who found that to be far and away the low point of the album.

I was also a little disappointed with the two longest songs and particularly their focus on instrumentation in favour of the kind of song writing that made their other more recent epics so good like When the Wild Wind Blows, The Legacy (and several others from AMOLAD) etc.

One of my biggest disappointments during my first listen was just how much of The Red and the Black was made up of a solo section. That disappointment was no doubt partly a result of my high expectations after hearing a lot of praise for that particular song.

Yo! Haven't checked any Maiden album after Seventh Son, but this seems promising.

Yeah it is. I still prefer Brave New World and A Matter... from their newer stuff but this is pretty great, especially for a double LP from a band that has released 16 albums!
