I don't like the album cover either, looks really cheap

Saw him play last friday on the release date
He snapped so many strings, he was playing like a man possessed. No matter how you feel about his music, his live shows are uniformly incredible

"You just confused every person on this site that isn't british mate, good on ya."
I'm not British and I was not confused at all.

Not really something I'd listen to normally, but he was a lot of fun when I saw him two years ago. Also saw him play in Mongol Horde last year, which was a lot of fun for many different reasons.

I'd kill to see a Mongol Horde show, but alas, I doubt that's ever going to come anywhere near Baltimore.

Very fluid and well-stated review, Dan. You pretty much summarized my feelings on this. It's upbeat, optimistic, and even purposely a little shallow depth wise because it works. I would like to hear your thoughts on Silent Key and Song for Josh though, which I feel are two of the best on here along with some of the highlights that you mentioned.

this is guaranteed to be painfully average

"...as the overarching optimism makes the record feel slightly thin and superficial compared to his previous offerings"
Hmmmm. So a positive, optimistic record cannot be a fantastic one?

I haven't got a definite opinion on this but from what I've heard the lyrics are a bit too banal, just like almost half of the songs on the album. Of course there are some great tunes, like Silent Key or Mittens, but overall it's a too "over-joyous" album. Will probably 3.5 it because it's not worse than Poetry of the Deed, but Tape Deck Heart had much better lyrics and less banal tunes and it was also quite different from the "standard Frank's release" as EKMB, for instance.

Been a fan of his music for years but this album turned out to be a letdown. I mean it is pretty good but a bit uninspired and insincere. In previous records you could hear Frank pouring his heart and soul into the music but these tracks just sound way too polished, refined and superficial for me.

Bit of a mixed bag this one, probably around a 3.3/5 from me. Some acoustic songs on the deluxe version sound better than the originals, especially the first track.
Got gig tickets to see Frank again in 2 weeks do a warm up show at a small local venue. He was good last time (nothing exceptional), expecting good again this time as promoting this album
