'You Satellite' is one of the better songs here, I'd rather more of the rest matched its style than they'd dropped it for more o' the same. Side 2 minus Magnetized is pretty ho hum for me

Also, Tweedy's Loose Fur partner in crime Jim O'Rourke dropped a twice as good album 'Simple Songs' a few months ago. There isn't one song here that can live with anything on that one, check it out

I don't know man - I think the 2nd half of this is way better than the first.

Still not understanding the really high praise this is getting. I mean I love Wilco to death and this album is very good, but in terms of initial reception, this is being considered almost as good as YHF which is just crazy. I doubt this will hold lasting interest the same way most other Wilco albums have.

This was a 3 on first listen for me. Solid, but nothing special. I've grown to like the songwriting and the raw sound of it all a bit more with more listens. No way this touches YHF, but this is pretty good on its own terms.
Edit: Yeah after sitting with it more, actually sticking with a 3 on this. Not one of their more memorable albums, but decent.

Jts - this was a 3 on my first listen and about 15 listens later it remains a 3, same score as Wilco (the album). Album is fine but don't hear what others are hearing beyond that. Yes it's got a fuzzy low end on most of the tracks, that really is the main difference

Track ratings:
EKG - 3/5 (prob a 2.5 really but fun and gutsy opening in context)
More - 4/5 solid opener proper
RNG - 4/5 fun, prefer to Drummer from YHF
The Joke - 3/5 decent, but loses way a bit
You Satellite - 4/5 2nd best song, very War on Drugs yes
Taste the Ceiling - 2.5/5 most average Wilco song ever? Unspectacular
Pickled Ginger - 3.5/5 album's grower but not amazing
Where Do I Begin - 3.5/5 Jeff you've recorded this near exact song 10 times before only better
Cold Slope 2/5 -most filler of filler tracks...
King of You 2/5 -...and transitions into another slightly better one. Still, these would be average on a Loose Fur album let alone for Wilco
Magnetized - 4/5 best on the album, maybe their best ever closing song, lovely but not a world beater of a best album track
Context: 5/5 = jesus etc, at least that's what you said, etc
4.5/5 = ashes of American flags, war on war, she's a jar, etc
Nothing on here matches that quality

So this was my first real listen to Wilco (apart from a passing listen to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot), and hmmm, what a pleasant surprise.

I see this in literally every comments section for every review for every Wilco album:
"This album is good, but it's not as good as _____, ______, or ______."

SmileNerd - Wilco keep releasing albums that sound much the same and their best material is long behind them so it's going to come up in the reviews
|

wat
no two Wilco albums sound the same

OoN - it's more like latter day Rolling Stones or Pearl Jam, the albums sound 'instantly familiar' and you'll start forgetting which songs are on which albums as every song sounds a bit like a previous song they've already done

What about the Late Greats?
Im partial to Ghost anyway. Probably my fav of thiers. Though summerteeth and yhf are right there. The high marks on ghost are better to me, but its not as consistent so idk.
