It of course indulgences in overblown orchestral

*indulges*

Apart from that, really nice review. Haven't heard this album yet but have heard the album preview, and it seems very promising stuff to me.

Just listened to the first song and it was pretty good, but not great. The electronic elements seem thrown in haphazardly, like more of an afterthought than anything that actually contributes to the quality of the song. The production seems like it should be weightier as well, it's almost like it can't support this kind of overblown music.

You should probably try Sideshow Symphonies first.

Anyone who's new to Arcturus and wants to dive into their discography should probably start with La Masquerade or The Sham Mirrors, they have their best material. This isn't a bad place either though, and all their albums are great.

Does LMI still make an impact though? It was mindblowing when released, I wonder how it works today.

Why would you tell him to listen to Sideshow Symphonies first over any other Arcturus album?

It depends on your taste. If you're more into obscure extreme metal, start at the beginning. If you're not an extreme metal fan, or more into esoteric or experimental, you might want to check out The Sham Mirrors or Sideshow Symphonies first.

ICX is a beast. Album's good (obviously apart from the mixing and production issues), but I really hate those triggered bass drums.

They have to be or you can't hear those crazy double spurts in The Arcturian Sign. Personally I can live with that triggered sound of his. But yeah, it's one of Hellhammer's trademarks.

Also, Demon was kind of a surprise. One of the best on this, just wish the last half was a little longer.

"Why would you tell him to listen to Sideshow Symphonies first over any other Arcturus album?"

Mainly because of ICS. But also, that's what I would listen to if I liked this.

This album is a grower. At first I did not listen to it much, but now I can't stop listening to it.

It's pretty addicting and easier to listen to than their others, besides maybe The Sham Mirrors.

La Masquerade Infernale is definitely the hardest album to digest. It was also my first Arcturus album and probably my favorite.

Yep. The Sham Mirrors is excellent too though.

Aspera Hiems and The Sham Mirrors are tied for me, both incredible albums. La Masquerade is pretty great too, certainly weird, but just a little too unfocused for me.
