Didn't the ghost bath bros lie mainly for the sake of not having to have anyone find out who they are?

The production job on this is great, they didn't rip all the low end out of the drums which keeps it heavy and punishing.

I can't wait for the vinyl release, everything the people involved put out always comes with amazing artwork and there is so much care put in to their releases. Will be well worth owning.

BadgerU, my favourite thing about the drums right there! It sounds extremely punishing

"This use of vocal control causes an unprecedented level submersion among blackened-shoegaze releases, one that I truly hope is adopted by the true pioneers of the scene."

I'm not sure if this actually means anything. What exactly is the "vocal control" going on here? The vocals sound pretty standard to me. Why does it induce more "submersion" than an "agonized" style (not that I would even really call Deafheaven's vocals agonized)?

Also if the "true pioneers" you're referring to are Deafheaven and Ghost Bath I think it might be time for me give up on post-bm....

The vocals remind me more of screamo/post-hardcore than anything else, elsewhere screamo also comes to mind (the amount of pathos just feels the same). IMHO BM shouldn't be used anymore in reference to this kind of music, it has nothing to do anymore with that strain of metal, adding blast beats and tremolo guitars doesn't change that. I do like the album on it's own.

RYM has this down as atmospheric sludge/blackgaze. Am I insane or is RYM completely nuts

RYM is just nuts, have you seen their averages on post 2002 albums?

need to give this a full listen but the individual tracks I've heard rule so far. This just makes me even more excited to hear if Deafheaven can compete.

this is 20 minutes too long and a bit samey, but otherwise it really rules. Come at them, deafheaven.

Hehe, I made a similar comment on a FB page a few weeks ago and got told off, cos apparently they're too different to compare, or some shit ;]
Hades is ridiculously good, the chord progression at the start is so damn dark.

Maybe if we start telling people it's better than New Bermuda they'll start commenting again.
