idk, it's definitely less immediate than Acceptance Speech was. I think you'll like it more with more listens

Maybe so, it's getting better towards the end half but still not very good

this is the first time I've ever thought that Mess should just stfu and let Tillian (or whoever it was) sing; this is Mess' worst effort by a country mile, and he just sounds fucking lazy 80% of the time whereas Tillian basically owns every second

Death of a Strawberry is a great example, Tillian's parts are so good and Mess' are horseshit

needless to say the Mess-lite songs on here are my faves

and Lost, like People You Know and Happiness t/t, is a perfect example of how when they drop the exaggerated funny-guy act they can make some really really great serious music but are obviously reluctant to do so because it goes against their image/would piss off the legions of teenage ex-Hot Topic fans

he just sounds like normal mess to me on that song and most other ones =p if I had to concede, it sounds like he might have taken a step back on this album and tilian has taken a step forward, but mess is still really great here in my eyes

I agree about lost, it's great, but I think that it being one of the only "serious" songs just makes it hit that much harder

It's not about the sound of his voice (I still loved him on Deathstar when he sounded like horseshit) I just think he's run his course. Six albums in and what, 9 years? and the schtick is finally getting old. He's not funny anymore, he's just throwing non-sequiturs because that's what is expected from him and it's a huge letdown. I absolutely loved him all the way up till and including Acceptance, but at points in this album I was actually saying out loud "shut the fuck up and just let Tillian sing"

Jon kind of needs to start taking his lyrics more seriously. It'd be a really nice change of pace

A darker DGD record could be exactly what they need

My favorite thing about this is when they do they do that signature dgd thing they do. You know what I mean; when the cleans and Jon are going all in at the same time and its like they are fighting for the spot light but feeding off each other in the process.

2:46 on shark dad is a good example of this. I feel like that sort of thing is what was missing on the last few albums especially dbm2. Lately they've been keeping cLean/heavy parts divided but imo the more they blend it the better it sounds

It sounds so good on dbm and they hit that sweet spot a few times here

Great piece! I loved your point about the opener, it really does set the tone for the album in a different way than any of their opening songs in a long time have.

Great review paradox1216. I agree with everything you said, and I will say this has to be the best album, since happiness and Downtown Battle Mountain.

Insurrection

Start with downtown battle mountain 1. If you do not like that try happiness, since they sound like two completely different bands. If you like either of those two albums you might like this, since this one and the one before it are equal parts dbm and happiness
