It's a classic pattern.

Dude goes through life thinking everything is stupid. Then he has some experience (in this case Tool) that resonates with his alienation. He feels the world could be saved if everyone has his experience. Soon he realizes that most people don't really give af about his silly epiphany, and he becomes angry and obnoxious.

Yeah, and I went to a liberal arts college and have met plenttyyyy of pretentious Tool fans so maybe it's just the experience, but either way they are definitely far more annoying than people that rightfully state that they are in fact annoying.
