the songwriting is so much plainer here. not to mention the instrumentation--i understand what sufjan was trying to do but damn i much prefer his earlier shit. the expansive instrumentation on illinois is one of my favorite things about it. i know this is a really personal album for him, but i really like the epic scope of illinois. much bolder songwriting on illinois too, more diverse

i think his boldest album is age of adz, illinois is fantastic but everyone was gonna like it and he knew that



it's definitely more diverse than this though, i'll give you that. and i'm personally a fan of the plain songwriting here if you couldn't tell ; )

Depends on what you consider "haunting", if you mean the lingering presence of someone else's spirit then this is most definitely haunting.
