Review Summary: Guitar Hero III The Game: The Album

Do you dig riffs? How about riffs? With a side of riffs? Drinking RIFFS? Then stop whatever fucking menial bullshit you are doing and go listen to Sheer Mag’s debut EP. I’m talking a balls to the wall, Thin Lizzy-meets-Cheap Trick-ass, punkgasm of a grand time. Due to this Philly quintet’s ridiculously adept songwriting chops, Sheer Mag is the kind of record that will sound instantly familiar to anyone who has ever jammed their parents’ record collection. This band is not without a righteous punk rock flair for showmanship, however. Their lead singer is a pretty big chick, but I’ll be damned if she doesn’t frick out with her clit out, Nico circa 1969-style, whenever this group plays a show. Sheer Mag’s modus operandi is getting toes a-tappin’, lighters a-wavin’, and singin’ a-longin’. And, much like their live performances, the band is extremely successful at that on this record. From the first bluesy lick of “What You Want,” to the savage, yet surprisingly svelte, “ay-yi-yi-yi-yi’s” of “Point Breeze” to the straight-outta-the-70s anthemic chorus of “Hard Lovin’,” this band establishes the power of ye olde tyme rock n’ roll, all with the most supple, honey-smooth guitar tone that I’ve heard in I don’t know how long.

I could not recommend this album any more than to say if you dig Hard Jams™ this is for you. If your idea of a guitar riff is a Teppei Teranishi siqq azz pusswank, then beat it, cuz youz a friggin’ chump.

Checked. Surprised actually... Guitars def stand out, the ol'school way. I'm not sure if a pro production would water down the punk or retro effect, but I'm betting this kind of riffage could sound even more huge. Cool dig & write-up, pos.

"svelte" nice. Sounds dope and GH3 was my jam, so even if that has nothing to do with the album, I'm keen to riff with it
