yeah it's not Anne Hathaway's fault they added some half-baked love story into the mix without developing it nearly far enough. She did will in this film. Matthew McConaughey's performance is being overrated like crazy (what else is new?) He did well but I still can't see why people are saying he's this immensely talented actor. The scene that was supposed to get me, I think, was when he's watching the video of his daughter at the same age he was when he left. Like, it was alright, but my friends had been raving about the film and had me believing that part would have me in tears and my jaw on the floor from his super raw acting. Again, it was alright. The shaking looked so fake though, I didn't believe I was watching the character cry, I felt like I was watching McConaughey try to win another Oscar.

Worst part of the movie, the daughter (grown up) kissing That 70s Show guy for some stupid reason before yelling Eureka!

also (and I get that he was supposed to be this SPACE COWBOY, but...)

can we please have just ONE role for McConaughey where he leaves that stupid half-drawl alone. Like dude it's a movie about space and interdimensional travel and family and loss and FUCK this would have been the perfect opportunity to not sound like an idiot for once.

alright alright alright

McConaughey's acting was really really fucking good in that one scene though
And re: the love speech yeah on paper it was cheesy as fuck but Hathaway saved it in the delivery imo

Both this and the movie are overrated as hell. 3.5 material for both. 2001 is and will always be the better film.

Ehh. The emotional scenes in Interstellar felt forced and I didn't ever feel for anyone. I felt more for whenever Dave unplugs HAL in 2001.

"McConaughey's acting was really really fucking good in that one scene though"

uhh... that's a neat opinion but clearly I disagree...as I thoroughly explained

I'm not as easily impressed as you I guess. Tears and shaking =/= "good acting"

it wasn't believable and was very disappointing as it was clearly supposed to be a very emotional scene

Does thinking he was incredible in that scene mean I'm easily impressed? It's just a different opinion, dude, I thought he was fucking good

in my opinion, yes that's exactly what it means. I wasn't trying to be a dick it was just weird that you responded to my analysis of why I thought it wasn't that great by going "but I thought it was good!" and not expanding on that at all.

like I went "his acting in that scene wasn't impressive for [reasons]"

and you went "his acting in that scene was good though!"

it doesn't make sense

anyway I like you, sorry for being a dick. I am just scratching my head at all the praise the movie and Matthew McConsdfgndsnsd is getting.

Yeah ok, fair enough, I didn't really justify myself there. I dunno, it's hard to explain why I think it was superb acting. It just seemed like an incredibly powerful reaction, and incredibly real considering the circumstance (not seeing your kids for 20 years and watching them age in front of you, I imagine you'd have a pretty strong reaction) and I thought he played it off perfectly. I always find it impressive when actors can pull a powerhouse performance without any dialogue - it's one thing to put emotion into your words but quite another thing to put it into your actions - and considering Cooper has basically no dialogue in that scene (except for I think just "hey Murph"), it floored me.

see that's cool but again I'll say I didn't think it was convincing. Yes, it needed to be very emotional, for reasons you described, but it seemed so fake and transparent. It was alright acting, he was definitely crying and shaking, but given the praise his performance (and that scene in particular) was given, "alright" doesn't cut it. Just because someone shakes and cries doesn't make it good. You just keep saying "it was a powerhouse performance", "it floored me" but I still don't know why...

Not talking doesn't make it a better performance imo. Like, it's a recording...and he's watching/reacting to it. It would have been pretty dumb if he started shouting MURPH WAIT at the screen.

The shaking was a little over the top for me. Like, that sort of thing needs to be pretty subtle to be effective, and (again), I don't think it was at all. I could see him acting. I didn't feel like I was watching Cooper realize he's missed his daughter's life, I felt like I was watching McConaghehyeyejejgdf try really hard to act well, with average results.

opinionsopinionsopinions, glad you enjoyed the film. I'm going to give it another go soon; I really want to like this movie even a small fraction as much as some of my blown-away friends did. And I'm so open to the idea that McConadgskdgs is a great actor (an almost unanimously held opinion these days) but honestly, I'm still waiting for a performance to prove that to me. He's good, no doubt about it, but I can't think of a single actor I find more overrated. There are so many people that would have done way more with this role and I feel like he got picked not because he suited it, but because he's Hollywood's darling atm. Everything he touches turn to gold and I'm just left going uhhhh are we watching the same thing? His annoying arrogance bleeds through into every role. He's so one-dimensional.

Like I said, it's hard to put into words, but I did my best. I take your point about subtlety but again, I think seeing your kids in a situation like that would evoke a pretty damn strong reaction, and I don't think he exaggerated it or anything. I loved that he started off with laughing and then gradually dissolved into the crying and shaking - as an actor myself, it's not an easy thing to go between the two extremes with that much conviction.

In general, I agree with you. In fact, that one scene was the first time he's ever floored me - in everything else I've always thought he was great but way overrated. I think it's the fact that his career has changed so much since he started - he certainly has come a hell of a long way - that people tend to praise his later performances perhaps a bit more than they should be praised. It's great seeing an actor develop so much but people tend to exaggerate it. Maybe it's just that he's good but tends to get outshined in whatever he's cast in - as two examples, you've got Dallas Buyers Club (where he was great but Jared Leto stole every scene they were in together) and True Detective (where he was great but Woody Harrelson stole every scene they were in together). Maybe that explains why Interstellar was the first time that he floored me, or maybe he just picked up his game a lot.

I do agree with you about that fucking annoying half-drawl he always though jesus christ he needs to give that a rest
