Alt rock was actually great in the 80s though: The Replacements, Jesus and Mary Chain, Pixies, Husker Du, and Sonic Youth especially.

Mainstream 80s was mostly really bad...still not half as bad as today but still. Though I will say the only times the mainstream was consistently interesting was late 60s to the early 70s and maybe early 90s. The turn of the new wave was also okay but still bogged down by a lot of generic disco.
