you know what the saddest thing is in hindsight? albums like Clayman. Because while perfectly fine in their own right, they mark the beginning of tendencies which would later snowball out of control.

that album is like stage 1a cancer. nothing wrong is seen readily, but it's frightening what it can turn into if not treated early enough

yeah. and soilwork's fnf/std were like stage 2 cancer. stagd was stage 3 and the panic broadcast was chemo. the living infinite and the ride majestic are convalescence

On the other hand In Flames said to themselves "fuck chemo, we prefer to be cancer-ridden and die". well maybe come clarity was like you know, some meditation session or visiting a holistic medicine shaman or something, haha. but then they said "fuck that too"

True Clayman may have been what triggered IF's downfall, but it's still one of their best albums. You could listen to The Jester Race, Whoracle, Colony and Clayman and never need to hear the rest of In Flames' discography. That's what i resorted to doing after A Sense of Purpose came out.

That the first time I've heard that theory, I would think people would assume Reroute to Remain was been the culprit.

clayman is significantly more mainstream than the albums preceding it

(it's still the best though)

Yeah, it's like putting an object in a metastable position and poke at it. Clayman did that already, while Reroute poked the object too hard and it fell down.

eh, point I guess but there isn't too much of a difference in sound, at least compared to Colony.

Clayman is very good, but they should never have gone any more mainstream than it

depends really. Reroute to Remain is actually my favorite IF album but I understand why people hate it.

R2R used to be my top 5 favourite but now I don't really like it much at all, the riffs sound painfully bland, the production is terrible and quite a few tracks are throwaway. There are some really great cuts from the album as well but it is pretty inconsistent.
