This was their last good record. Love the breakdown at the end of I Am King.

Alright this is something I'm curious about: there's a lot of people who hate Code Orange, and it feels immediate too. Like after hearing one song, they already know they despise this band. Why is that?

because they've been absolute shite since they dropped the kids from their name. they don't know how to use industrial sounds and textures at all and their songwriting is all over the place and terrible. literally some of my least favorite songwriting of any band i've ever heard. their riffs and breakdowns are uninspired and boring.

Does everyone on sput automatically give a 4 to any album that is vaguely a post metal album? Because that's the only reason I see as to why every single Code Orange thread has a "band went to shit after they dropped the kids from their name". People here only like that album because it sounded like Converge and had post metal elements. That's it. I think Return to Dust is great but it is severely underwritten.
The songwriting post kids is extremely layered and eclectic, the vocals are incrediby inventive in how they fit the song, and their breakdowns (especially on this album) are vicious. I love how they incorporate industrial elements, of all the -core bands Code have some of the most fascinating use of textures and their production is very three-dimensional. Not to mention how well I Am King and Underneath flow between songs.

There is absolutely nothing innovative about genericore breakdowns

Yo david, you're exactly spot-on with your observations. God forbid you ruffle the feathers of the almighty gatekeepers.

I don't even love the kids album, it's just not terrible like their other shit. They could write good songs if they didn't stick in terribly generic breakdowns and industrial textures that kill the flow of the song and don't make any fucking sense every 30 seconds. Their industrial shit sounds fucking terrible, it's like they've always gotta change tempos or just throw a random "ambient" part in that doesn't flow at all. They have no transitions lol. And I can like that shit sometimes, I mean I like between the buried and me, but they seem to think that tempo change every 30 seconds + different style every minute = good song. It reminds me of when I made songs when I was like 16 and trying to be progressive lol. Their vocals have always sort of sucked, they're not good at screaming and just drench everything in production to make them sound more powerful. The annoying thing is that they have good ideas here and there, but then just kill it by throwing stupidity in. Then, if they ever do have a song that generally has smooth writing, it's some terribly uninteresting grunge song or some shit.
Also don't know how I'm gatekeeping lol. They asked why people hated code orange and I said what I think. I don't give a fuck what yall like but it's not for me.
At the end of the day they need to listen to more full of hell or the body or some shit and learn how to use textures.

Yeah can relate a lot Full of Hell with Code Orange. Being one more accessible than the other.
FoH slays for days. CO honestly lost me with Underneath. Still ok for the scene they're into.
"it's some terribly uninteresting grunge" wait a second, their grunge songs are awesome. lol XD
Suppatime, you described the band pretty well, if we ditch the pejorative tone lololol

Full of Hell is the shittttt. Code Orange just sounds like a Jackson Pollock painting to me in the worst way. I mean, I guess they're trying so I should commend em for it? Just not my thing. But maybe they'll get it right one day.

When I started to listen to these guys I felt they were needed. They sounded as something I've never heard, mixing the core scene I was into, but getting bored of, and forced the industrial electronic NIN and grunge vibes into it. And yes it feels forced and it was cool that way, glitchy, as if they were the wrecked result of some algorithm.
Somehow, as big grunge fan, appreciator of NIN's work&legacy, and coming from the hardcore and metalcore scene (listening habits and attending clubs and shows), they came as just what I needed.

That's fair. I love all that shit too so I should like this on paper I suppose but they've just never worked for me. I can get picky with this stuff though because I feel like a lot of it is very derivative. The whole modern scene of hardcore/metalcore is very hit or miss for me and I wish some of these bands would branch out a little more and take some risks. I always prefer chaos and good riffing/math elements instead of the beatdown breakdowns. I'm a sucker for rhythmically interesting shit and I feel like a lot of the current scene is pretty by the numbers in that department.

Code Orange are super rhythmically interesting to me. This album in particular each song has a different type of drum beat or alteration that makes them stand out from each other. Even when they’re throwing everything at you, I find that I’m able to see the shape of these songs as opposed to a lot of core and even extreme metal

God I should've listened to this a lot sooner because there are some full on Helmet riffs here. And like good Helmet riffs too, they learned all the right lessons from Page Hamilton

Shade's gutterals on this album are disgusting. I hope this band never pulls a Neurosis and have him stop doing vocals. I feel like metal bands often neglect vocal integration wrt songwriting, so I appreciate when bands try to be creative with their vocals

Deftone kinda summed up why I greatly enjoy Code Orange too. My two favorite genres are industrial and metalcore and it always bugged me that little/no bands ever try to combine them. I think Code Orange balances and mixes the two pretty well.
However, they have serious trouble writing and transitions within the songs and while I don't mind that, I can see why others would get annoyed.
Also, Jami's ego and hyping up how amazing and different the band is gets kind douchey at times even though he seems like a nice guy irl.
Forever and Underneath are fucking awesome, end of speech.
