*update - settled with a 4.5/5 instead of 5/5.
| | | Excellent review, Johnny. I can't really pick out any glaring issues on this one. While it is one of your best reviews, I found it interesting that you took two main points of comparison (the deer and the scenery) and essentially had them as separate portions of the review. It's not really a bad thing at all, I just found it interesting enough to comment on. You did a great job here, man.
| | | this is a pretty good review but i feel like you're tripping at certain points. your second, third, and fourth paragraphs are very loosely tethered and seem non sequitur. you spend the second paragraph making a point that doesn't relate to the album you're reviewing, although i can see why you did it anyway. the forest analogy perhaps isn't apt, but it's not bad by any means. another one of those paragraphs where i get the points you're correlating but i'm unsure of how well they actually connect. your conclusion almost seems to contradict your central thesis, because you say it's 'added with care' and make it sound meticulously constructed (ie: the opposite of effortless). i might be reading too far into that last bit though.
those sound like heavy criticisms, but the writing here is definitely good. my only gripes really are with the flow of it, otherwise very solid material.
also, this: "Granted, this could be backwoods bullshit used as justification for bloodlust" made me laugh. in that sentence you adopt that more conversational approach we were talking about and it's great.
| | | thanks Gyro. yeah, I get what you mean about the flow. this was a bit of an experimental review on my part, but I'm glad you pointed out the missteps.
| | | This is beautiful, like you wrote in the review (by the way, nice writing). It's great, but it's missing something that would make it a 4.5 for me.
