Perhaps the strongest aspect of that release was the incredible vocal work by Bobby Barnett, whose pained delivery induced instant memories of being home alone and drunk on a Saturday night

nailed a massive part of CWS's appeal right there

i dont think that the songs being reworks necessarily means the album was phoned in or anything. over in japan, its completely common practice for bands to release songs on non-album releases and then rework a lot of em for the album. its because they often consider the first released version of the song to be not fully developed versions, so the album version is kinda supposed to be the finished, perfected, final one. really, if you think about it, artists usually have multiple versions of songs before they get to the final album one; it's just that they might not release the old versions.

i'd say it was almost definitely the same with TKONM: bobby put out some solo songs, but he took em further with CWS and probably thought that it was fine to release the CWS versions on the album cuz the solo ones were more like acoustic demos.

obviously the effect is that the new album doesnt feel as fresh cuz you've heard half the songs before but it's not a totally invalid thing to do.

anyway about steady ache bobby said on fb that the money that goes into that record will go right into making the next album; dude is truckin along

I really like Steady Ache. It's not as good as this, but super charming.

The reworks are why i thought the album was such a disappointment. I didnt think they translated well to the full band at all.

And i wouldnt say its invalid to rework a song and put it on your album, but when half the songs are reworked songs, that feels a little cheap. (i know, not half, but 4/11 is definitely too many)

i think Leo is definitely the better songwriter on TKONM.
