I like how this album is somehow a mix between Heritage and Damnation in a way. Really makes me appreciate it a lot more than Heritage.

so far this is def my favorite post-Watershed moment, but it's still in the lower echelon of Opeth albums

I mean the past 3 albums are by far the “worst” things they’ve done yet. I still dig them all a bit though. They’re at least somewhat enjoyable every now and then.

yeah, visiting Sorceress right now and it feels pretty much like a step down from this but still above Heritage.

Heritage is wayyyy up there for me, it's a twisted, original, beautifully made album where you can hear the band having fun. The two that came behind sadly don't do that, and I completely agree that they are their worst efforts, although they're still enjoyable.

I can see how Heritage would be higher for others but for me it's definitely their worst album.

"There's just a sad sense of gothic magic that's had its black candlelight flame blown out by a hippie's bong smoke pervading the album."
Sums up their newer sound perfectly.
Never go full Boomer.

I would love to hear them go more in that direction. River is superb.

I was jamming Jethro Tull yesterday and all I could think of was "Damn, this sounds like the last 3 Opeth albums".
For some reason, I had never made the connection that Mike has obviously got a massive hard one for them.

yeap, akerfeldt loved camel and that whole generation of prog. its probably the reason why they have so much accoustic in their discog, but lately they've gone full on cult prog worship.
