Yeah well ornette Coleman's shape of jazz to come and free jazz are pretty tame-ish I think.
But if you wanna get into Coltrane, a love supreme may a good choice. A good balance between the cool bop of his earlier albums and the more experimental and frenzied spiritual jazz of his later years.
Either that or blue train is simply the way to go.

Thanks, Cyg. I'll definitely start with one of those for Coltrane

Yeah honestly spiritual unity has never really interested me, I've only ever found it ~pleasant~ [but not jarring like unit structures and black saint.]

Kerfuffle can be nice

Check Brotzmann - Machine Gun lol
|

black saint isn't jarring it's just awesome
|
| |
Then why did you think it was mediocre
|
| |
because i didn't like it at the time
|
| |
Because it was jarring?
|
| |
boom
|
| |
no, not because it was jarring (it really isn't). it's because i just wasn't into it.

AMM's live show methodology is pretty nuts
and some of Keith Rowe's stuff ain't too shabby
