"It may indeed make the payoff that much more potent, but the eventual ecstasy in drinking from an oasis pond does not mean that I am to enjoy the crawl over hot sands to get there."

this was a good line but literally none of this album feels like crawling over hot sands

"More like everywhere that ranks post-rock albums puts these at the top. Look up literally any list of "best post rock albums" and whether it's a blog post or a magazine you're gonna find one of the two."

not my point. the thing is, you sound like you rely on pretty much meaningless lists rather than their influence on post-rock and what really makes them so appreciated

"It would be far too easy to dismiss my opinions as simply not liking post-rock in general, but I wanted to make sure to make it known that this isn't the case. I love post-rock. Just not this."

you don't need to make sure you like post-rock, i can easily read it between the lines that you like post-rock. also if your arguments are valid (like they really are on this) you have no need to point out that you're in fact into the genre in general

you really are picking at nothing here - his point, however badly written it was or wasn't, is that it's a highly influential and important classic in post-rock and that's inarguable

Ok man this review is not poorly written, but how you convey your points is very...off so to speak:

Your second paragraph is entirely irrelevant. It's just put in there for the sake of assuring us "Wait guys I do like post rock though!!" We don't care about what other post rock you like, we care about we you think of the album at hand. Also like Arty said, try to avoid the first person.

"The slow passages are simply too slow, too long, and too barren of substance to make listening to them by themselves an enjoyable experience."

Speak for yourself.

"The four tracks are completely separate from one another right down to following the same general pattern."

I don't really understand how you can say this. Yes some of the more song like movements follow the rise crescendo fall pattern, but it seems like you are just examining this as a grouping of soundwaves rather than music. Ever song that does this SOUNDS different. The structure may be the same sometimes, but the way they all turn out is entirely different.

"I wanted to like this album. This was far from my first attempt to understand the hype."

This is another problem. Yes, this is often considered a classic of post rock, but when reviewing it you can't think about how it's heralded. It's about what YOU think of it and how YOU enjoy it. Not what everyone else thinks of it. You are trying to force yourself to enjoy but you're not gonna enjoy it if you are only thinking about the hype and trying to force it down like coconut vodka.

Also, my biggest issue is this: say I haven't listened to this. I would have no idea what this sounds like. You say their are crescendos rises and falls and ambient textures, but how. What types of instruments do they use to convey this? All stuff you have to work on bro. Do with this what you will. Sorry if I'm a tad harsh, but you need to work on your points a bit more.

@noctus what i'm trying to say, is that it was so superficial that it just didn't sound good at all

This is a fair point. I tend to do my reviews by feeling more than the minutiae and I'm still not entirely sure that would really do much good here. Does it help to point out the violins here, the glockenspiels there? Would you really have come away wanting to listen to the album more if I pointed out that during the second break of Static there's heavy use of metallic feedback?

Except it doesn't. Like.. it really doesn't. Yes, they literally use different melodies, but they don't go on a different journey at all. They just use different melodies to the same purpose. It's one incredibly long song done four times. It doesn't turn out entirely differently.

Also, you can't complain that I wasn't being specific enough and then in another paragraph say I wasn't listening to the music as a whole. Which is it?

"Speak for yourself."

Hey, either I'm speaking for myself (and thus in the first person) or I'm supposed to be Captain Professional and always speak from a distance. Take your pick. I tried very hard here to emphasize that this, being an album of emotions, was simply an album that refused to click with me, you can't get all up my ass for not "speaking for myself" now.
