I don't think this band ever got 'patchy' until their last and the new EP. Cuz at that point their songwriting was literally thrown out the window in an attempt to cling onto whatever 'retro' trend they think they used to be praised for. Like, a lot of their post-Room on Fire material was really, really good and I thought they adapted perfectly to a new style while still having their image of this debut maintained.
But i guess the criticism of their later stuff not being as up to par or the same as their early stuff is what eventually drove them to making... Future Present Past. blegh,
