Duuuuuude, I've heard that Finnish birds are attracted to a race of people known as 'Artumas'.
Think you'll be fine ; )
|

oh
cool
|

You forget that the population density in Scandinavia is kinda low. Plus not every culture is as hellbent on social interaction with random strangers as Angoslaxon and Angloamerican cultures.
Also, this be one of the better Rammstein albums.

it's a well-known fact about finns that we never talk to or even look at strangers unless we're drunk

"staying at home jamming good music > girlfriends anyway"
ahrd

Seriously? And I thought GB was so "multicultural". I've met a bunch of Finns, all of them utterly crazy - admittedly, that was mostly on metal concerts so that may be a factor in the equation.
"but staying at home jamming good music > girlfriends anyway"
Having an interesting life > searching for partners

Finnish people are warm, open and sincere, even though they might tell you the exact opposite.
If you’ve ever met a Finn, chances are they’ve mentioned the reserved nature of their countrymen. Be not afraid – we’re not taciturn brutes.
Finns are talkative and hospitable, but the myth of the withdrawn Finn is still alive and well inside Finland. And Finns, with their self-deprecating wit, will be the first to let foreigners in on it.
An example of a Finnish joke: “An introverted Finn looks at his shoes when talking to you; an extroverted Finn looks at your shoes”.

haha i know a couple of these cases as well. that's exactly why i didn't go to see neurosis in june, as the crowd was full of those weirdos

That theme runs pretty much throughout all "Germanic/Scandinavian" cultures.
Something a lot of Americans in particular mistake for hostility/being impolite or disrespectful, for us it's mostly the exact opposite. Keeping a certain distance is respectful thing to do.

They weren't necessarily bad, some of them a bit over the top but some were pretty cool. I was pretty good friends with a Finn for a time, me and his crew pretty much did something every week. We also had a small, bearded Irish guy though.

Wish I could speak Finnish, I know a little German.
Shows how ignorant British culture is, you guys speak perfect English and most Brits only know their own language.
|
| |
Well, if your country has a history of being an gigantic world-spanning empire they don't really think much about "adequate means of communication" - particularly if their language is the de facto world language. That certainly lends itself to nationalist/jingoist/xenophobic and "isolationist" tendencies.
|
| |
it's just important to be able to communicate in english. i don't really speak other languages either, a little bit of swedish and french but that's about it
|
| |
Yeah, same. If I actually cared about French I might've properly learned it but I honestly didn't really have the muse to do so - particularly in a course that tried to weasel their way out of doing anything productive all the time.
