If deathcore typically expresses traits like poor song structure and boring guitarwork, both of which are condemnable in their own right, I can in fact condemn a deathcore band for expressing those traits even if that's technically just 'sounding like a deathcore band'.
| | | Yeah, but you can't make a call like that, it's not a fair assesment. That's like saying that pop typically displays traits such as a mediocre vocalist that's unexperimental, layered over average, easily digestible electronic beats. That's not listing traits, that's giving a judgement on the 'characteristics' of the genre based on expectations that just aren't met within said genre. For example, complaining that Chris Barnes isn't clear enough in his enunciation and you're having trouble connecting with the lyrics wouldn't be fair. Coarse vocals and (as a by-product) unintelligable lyrics are generally a part of death metal, whether it's your thing or not would be irrelevant.

Even if they're generally a part of a specific genre, traits/characteristics of a genre can be good or bad depending on the quality of the songwriting, which is judged/reviewed independently of the genre even if it's par for the course.

that's absolutely true, because that comes down to the individual artists. I was just saying that you can't make a call on whats good and bad about a genre as a whole; it's much too general. Your review was good because you didn't bash the entire genre like so many reviews I've read, which is why I liked it.

Oh, I misunderstood your posts as if you didn't understand what I was saying. Yeah, like I said before, I have no idea why people review a genre instead of reviewing an actual release, which is what they should be doing.
| | | It's all good, I agree with that
