I rather enjoyed this album. Its not the best I've heard but its a hell of a lot better than a 1.5.

Go jam the melodeath classics then get back to me in a few days about how this isn't mediocre crap in the context of the general history of melodeath.

This album is awful.

I'm amazed this one is getting slammed by so many people here (though not by most of the music critics) as I think this is their best release in a LONG time. It has some of their most inspired riffs since Wages of Sin and I for one love their new singer.

It's definitely one of their best... but what does that really mean?

Amen.
I swear their last 3 or 4 music videos all look the fucking same.

It's their best since Rise of the Tyrant which is my personal favorite toward which I am biased. Next to that it's their best since Doomsday Machine, but even then that's not saying much.
It has some of their most inspired riffs since Wages of Sin and I for one love their new singer.
Remember that one track whose lead riff is seriously just palm-muting one note? And then some powerchords, I think? There's very little originality here omg

I do like Rise of the Tyrant a lot too and maybe after some more listens my opinion will change but I think this is the most interesting they've been since Wages. I'm also a fan of most of what they've done so I'm not the typical person bashing all of their releases. I also personally like both Angela and Alissa more than Johan, he has incredibly limited range. That being said the music during his time was some of their best.

I'm more interested in what the next album will be like with Alissa, this was more a test for Alissa I guess.

with an album title like war eternal, this has to be a deep original album full of inspiring lyrics right

I guess it's a good album if you haven't heard much of their back-catalog...

I think it's an abomination no matter how much Arch Enemy or overall melodeath you've heard

Heard plenty of melodeath and AE's back catalog and I still really dig it.

Why tho. It's completely derivative and has nothing interesting instrumentally. Rise of the Tyrant's choruses absolutely destroy this record, and RotT is only a 3.5/5.

There's a lot of riffs that I really liked and Allisa's vocals are excellent; it's that simple. Is is the next Slaughter of the Soul or Arch Enemy's best overall? Not even close. But I still found it to be a pretty damn good melo-death record.

What if Amott didn't play leads for 90% of the album :O

At the very least it would've been more interesting for an AE record. I would've liked to hear where the knew guy took the style.

Also they could add some clean vocals, other melodeath bands have done that
