Oh brilliant. First comment on this site and I mess it up. Time to be judged

I think this is going to have to grow on me. It's so bizarre. So far I can pick out 4 songs I really like, and the rest feels like a bizarre mess of psychotic padding. Not sure if that part will grow on me or if I'll have to just start playing a few of the songs and not doing the album as a whole

no worries booth, you are a cute dog according to your avatar so i will withhold judgment ;]
nomos i have accepted this album as 'a bizarre mess of psychotic padding' of sorts, which has led me quite satisfied. as much as i love immaculately constructed albums on the whole, this record's unpredictability still keeps me guessing (THO!-- there is something to be said for the more singular tracks on here, the ones that are great independently of the record. this is where i once again compliment the song "Mauerbauer..." in the hopes that someone considers giving it a spin, because it really is gorgeous.)

I hope it reaches that level for me - I'm a fan of prog that is so long-winded and unstructured because it usually lasts longer for me. Picking out my favorite melodies and then overplaying them is what ruins a lot of super catchy music. So far I love Pink Lemonade, Neoprene Byzantine, Seeds of Gold, and That Brahmatron Song. The rest...I have no idea what's going on, and I'm not sure if that's bad or not yet. Actually Seeds of Gold might be the most immediate and radio-friendly on the album, I love it. That Brahmatron Song is fun and then...and then I don't know, it just stops and they jam and scream for a few minutes. That one could have been two songs, or a real song/b-side jam.
Is it fair to say that they did a fair amount of drugs while writing this album?
So far in those songs, it's a couple VOs and 'weird' moments that throw me off. This is seeming like something I might blast late at night when I'm baked, and not really something I'd play in the car for friends. I have never been more conflicted because I've been listening to these guys since their first release and been waiting forever for this.

I like that we can have discussions on here about music, Nomos. I think I remember us also talking about Icarus the Owl a fair bit- or am I mistaking you for someone else?
You're definitely right in that some of these songs are fairly confusing structurally, but I'll also tell you I think the eccentricities of this record are a bit overstated. While I definitely think there are some confusing aspects to a song like Dinosaur Battle, y'know, I'd say that it sounds fairly logically written to my ears- there are particular parts that build on each other and lead to climaxes in the song, and while I think the instrumentation may be what throws me off the MOST, I still find this album relatively digestible from a songwriting standpoint- not that it makes a fuckton of sense, but I'd say I could sing along to most of the record after maybe three spins. It sticks with me rather well, far better than I expected it to.
It definitely isn't the kind of record that I expect much longevity from- I honestly haven't listened to it in about a week- but I know that I'll have a real fun time when i come back to it. Also, you don't like Technochrist much do you? That surprises me, because after a couple spins that song seems to be one of the best-written tunes here.

good review by the way, brother

Hah! Yes I believe that was me. That's another album I need to come back to - I overplayed it and so took a break so I wouldn't ruin it for myself.
You're probably right about the structure - I've only given it one-and-a-half disjointed spins and so I probably haven't memorized the flow very well yet. I think I actually said the same thing about the last Icarus album before I listened 5 more times, and then I wasn't sure why I thought it was a mess in the first place.
Ahh yes, Technochrist is pretty good. I've only heard it once fully. It will probably be another favorite soon. Longevity will be a problem for this one I think...I'll just break it up among all the great music I've been finding lately. Like in the period of two weeks I've discovered Danny Brown, FKA Twigs, Kimbra, and two new Anberlin songs that I need to process.

Thank you tempest, damn I feel so welcomed.
Review man I agree with you about Mauerbauertraurigkeit (totally didn't have to copy and paste that). It's really beautiful, it's a shame that it almost gets overshadowed by the bombast of the other tracks. I find the vocals in the second half brilliant, it sounds like he means every word he says. Obviously that's just how I feel of course, you may feel differently!

Thanks for the welcome! I agree, Beckon Fire is lovely.
Also the final section of Dinosaur Boss Battle with that thunderous drop is pretty damn sexy I think

that one groovy part in the middle of technochrist is wonderful
been digging this a lot, but despite repeated listens still not sure what to make of it
props to closure in moscow for creating a record that actually is baffling me
