too glossy, too over-the-top, too obvious and too kitschy to be taken seriously

it's also too lifeless to be enjoyed in a so-bad-it's-fun kind of way

basically just a tasteless mess

I'm impressed so far but it deserves more than a couple of listens to really make an impact. Heading towards at least a 4 though

Glossy an album with so many different layers? Too over the top? How could anything be too over the top? Unless ''over the top'' doesn't mean ''perfect'', I think that's impossible. Well, obvious would be reasonable, you know what to expect from Epica, but then again, that can't justify a 2.0. Now, as for tasteless, it depends on your tastes so I can't speak.

The lyrics suck something bad but it's made up for by pretty much everything else. It's a great example of an album that's so over the top it works.

Tbh there are far, far, far, far, far, far, far worse lyrics than the ones made by epica, sure, they are not 10/10 but they are decent anyways

preordered forever ago and still haven't gotten it yet. I refuse to listen until it comes and the good reviews make me oh so tempted to listen online.

Will give this a go, RFTI was pretty awesome though and none of their other albums have been as satisfying.

You spend too much time on the town metaphor and too little on actually assessing the album. Neg'd.

"its worth it during your first 3 listens but after that its not 'as' worth it"

I strongly agree even though it's obvious I like this more than you. I find that this is a common problem with a lot of power metal and for example modern melodic death metal.

@LaughingSkull, well, it's more of a fifty/fifty amount of space, however, you're the first to tell me a goddamn reason to neg, so actually, thank you!

This seemed like an improvement over Requiem. They made a nice sequel to "Kingdom of Heaven."

"The Fifth Guardian" reminds me of the Japanese influence in Wintersun's "Time I". Not sure exactly what influence Epica put in this track but it also has that "Eastern" sound to it. It's just so magical. It makes me feel like a kid watching a favorite Chinese movie just like so long ago. Ahhh I'm feeling so homesick. Love this track.

^ Yep, it's a great track, and really long and enjoyable for an interlude, especially when other bands' interludes are just mere sounds and effects...

Yes, that is even the case for Tool, who I also really like.
