Pop punk is a genre I'm still not too fond of. I give it credit for somewhat introducing me to the better punk bands I like now, but the state of the genre itself today is very shameful. Continually proving to be stagnant and increasingly sugary, the genre as a whole is just a big fat joke nowadays, with a few minor exceptions. Of course though, punk was generally founded on the idea of the three minute, straightforward rock song, which could be equated into pop. Most of these original bands did it right though, with a certain amount of creativity, depth, and musicality that many others still have yet to come close to matching. The Descendents are quite easily the first true pioneers of the style though, despite what the Ramones did. The Ramones still have a sound that's similar, but the Descendents seem to have taken the genre to a whole 'nother level with their masterpiece of a debut, Milo Goes to College. Only clocking in at 25 minutes, there is not a second of bad music on here, even the extra short songs under one whole minute are fantastic. This is just sincere, honest punk rock with a somewhat poppy flavor, but you can tell it's coming from a creative background as opposed to a commercial one due to the lyrics, amount of speed, and execution. Sure, there isn't an astounding amount of variety, but this is straightforward rock n' roll, it's not King Crimson or anything like that. The variety gets more and more noticeable as the record continues though, as they slow down a bit and go for a more musical side of things. All in all, a masterpiece of punk rock, and one that seems to continually stay timeless for generations to come. This is punk rock with a catchy flavor made by the oppressed nerds, not the fucking jock figures we get in the genre nowadays. 10 fucking stars

eh I'm not big on this genre so my opinion really doesn't have that much weight supporting it.

the people who dislike this seem to evaluate this album as if it came out yesterday. a little bit of consideration for when it was released might help you to realize how innovative and fun it was

i'm evaluating this album like i do any other album

putting when it came out into consideration is dumb, its just a cop out to say something is good 'oh it was innovative!' i don't give a shit i'm listening to it now
