Not a match-up I'd normally come down too hard on either way, but Eddie Vedder of all people getting trashtalked by a boi with multiple Avenged Sevenfold 5s is exactly what keeps me coming back to this silly, silly site

I’ll be completely honest, the gap between Kiedis and Vedder is huge. Vedder doesn’t actively ruin PJ songs, I just don’t really care for the music much in the first place.

Kiedis is just complete trash. John Frusciante is a ridiculously talented guitarist imo and Kiedis just shits all over anything good in a RHCP song. I can at least find some enjoyment in a Pearl Jam track, every RHCP track is just a non starter because of Anthony.

I think you’re completely off base about Dave Grohl and Corgan, but for completely opposite reasons. Dave is a perfectly competent vocalist most of the time, it’s just Foo Fighters are so bland that it doesn’t really matter. Billy on the other hand, yes, is fucking terrible a lot of the time. But Billy (in his prime at least) knew how to write interesting songs. Any Pumpkins post 2000 sucks because now you have a bad vocalist who can’t fall back on being a talented songwriter.

Blink I never gave a fuck about so maybe you’re right there.

And to be fair, even tho I love Avenged Sevenfold, i have rated a couple of their albums pretty low. I’d rather listen to this than Hail to the King at least.

accurate

Blink are low-effort comfort music, and I think the fairest thing that can be said about them from any standpoint is that the appeal of their music never demands em to be taken particularly seriously as musicians (Travis is a bonus obvs) - nothing wrong with a mediocre set of pipes if they're an insurance policy that everyone within earshot is more than capable of singing along

don't have a firm preference either way for Pearl Jam vs. A7X as a whole, but comparing Shadows to any halfway competent vocalist is a meme standoff

I'm a pre-2000 SP fan, but don't care much about PJ apart from 2 albums. Indeed, Billy Corgan was a very talented songwriter, which (thankfully) overshadows his vocal (in)capabilities. But it also has a charm, I couldn't imagine Vedder screaming "The world is a vampire".

Yeah, I know this is the take a lot of Pumpkins fans have so I know I’m not being original or anything, but I really do think that on Mellon Collie, Siamese Dream, and Adore, Billy’s vocals suit the music well enough.

Kiedis works for RHCP as simple as that.

There's this (no longer active) reviewer on RYM called elgringocolombiano who mainly focuses on hip hop and he has this weird (unintentionally hilarious?) format for reviews but he always breaks down the vocals and for BSSM he went:

'VOCALS AK is a decent singer, with a good emotive voice. AK also raps on some songs, & is a wack rapper, yet not so bad that it ruins the songs.'

That sums it up...dude is wack but he's just still got the right energy for RHCP and he's got a bit of range strangely enough. I can imagine another vocalist doing one type of RHCP song but I can't imagine someone stepping in on all their material.

Vedder also has the right energy for PJ, great frontman.

Billy has just enough of this androgynous/feminine/old time'y romantic thing that is quite unique and again goes really well with most of their songs. They definitely peaked on 'Siamese Dream' which had a softer edge to his singing and more forgiving production for them.

By the time he's opening albums with slightly suspect riffs and proclaiming 'You know I'm not dead, You know I'm you know I'm not dead' in this overconfident nasal whine I'm a little less into it, but that's rock n' roll.

I'm seeing Smashing Pumpkins live at the beginning of June and Pearl Jam live at the end of June so I'll compare and get back to ya'll.

I agree with Wildcard - Billy's voice is perfect for SP.
