Album is pretty good, but I can see why people would dislike it. This sounds hardly like Cynic.

it sounds exactly like cynic if you take into consideration the last ep and traced in air

This would have been my disappointment of the year last year if it wasn't for the new Yes album.

Except the Yellow/Green albums didn't feature a band forgetting how to write songs.

i wouldn't mind if they did prog rock if it was within the level of music found on focus and traced in air, but this is just a bit too watered down. not very emotional either, which was what ultimately sold me on their older albums.

a good example of soft cynic is the portal tapes. beautiful songs on dat

or how to produce them. some bands sound great raw, but cynic not so much. for a band that's always evolved their sound from album to album, every time they try to peel back their songwriting to just the bare bones, it feels like a devolution.

it was a devolution, absolutely. The songs transition from section to section horribly and the whole

thing is a jumbled mess. I'm pretty sure I was sober the first time I listened to this and laughed at

just how poorly the songs were structured--which is something I assumed I'd be more inclined to do

whilst less mentally coherent.

Yeah, I've dug this from the initial release.

I see where the negative reactions come from, but the flaws don't bother me for the most part. The mid-section of the album is weak compared to the album's opening and closing.

Other than influencing tons of bands and practically paving the way to a new sub-genre of death? hell yeah, fuck these guys for being nice people overall and artists

Suffers from being a Cynic disc. Expectations were high and we can all agree they failed to deliver

So fucking disappointing. I'm not sure how this record even happened. The reviewer hit the nail on the head -- it sounds like they just sloppily jammed for a bit, on acid of course, then polished it a bit in post and released the record. It's so messy and boring and lazy. What happened to these guys?

I never thought it would happen, but this is so silly and bad that I can't even listen to their old stuff anymore. Just like the Pitchfork review mentions, it just opens wounds.
