"It's not about him. It's the Drake show. There is no community." Are you sure? Maybe he doesn't necessarily
represent hip hop culture, but he's always name dropping his hometown of Toronto, running OVO fest annually
there earning virtually no money from it and also having Toronto artists on his label along with local
amateur directors filming his music videos. He's also global ambassador to the Toronto Raptors, and
was influential in bringing in several marquee players to Toronto FC of the MLS.

can you guys just stop this argument?

When did hip-hop become synonymous with sports teams?
God, that's so annoying.

That is why I said not necessarily hip hop culture, idiot.
|

And that's not what I meant either. There's a trend where hip-hop artists go after sports teams (mostly basketball) when they achieve success. I would like to see them venture into other areas such as education and personal service/volunteering - something that really speaks for the values they represent.

Drake has donated to inner city schools, has had concert proceeds go to Autism charities and the multiple-
sclerosis society of Canada (his producer, Noah '40' Shebib has MS). He once even teamed up with The Game to
pay for the funeral of a woman's husband and their five children who died in a mobile home fire. He has also
contributed to music schools some of which are set up for terminally ill children. If rappers become
ambassadors for basketball teams, it's because those teams are often part of the identity of the city they
grew up in. Once again, showing community.

He sounds like a good dude. Too bad I hate his music.

I can understand that, but I don't like people bashing him personally because they perceive him as douchey or selfish.

KRS was homeless for like a few months, so what?
Anyway, being homeless would give him plenty of opportunities to have shat Drake out.

Guys this argument is dumb

No its not. The future depends on whether 'hip hop' is associated with artists like Drake or artists
like KRS. You know its true.

this really isn't much of an argument, at least not much of an abrasive one. it's more of a discussion amongst peeps with plenty to say about a guy who is probably the biggest hip hop artist right now

"No its not. The future depends on whether 'hip hop' is associated with artists like Drake or artists
like KRS. You know its true."
hip-hop does not care enough about Drake for him to be the guy people will associate hip-hop with a
few years from now, I'm certain people are going to look instead at artists like Kendrick Lamar or
Kanye West than Drake. If Drake was that much of an important figure, Toronto's hip-hop scene
would've had a sizable bit of relevance by now.

Drake has more Billboard 100 hits than the Beatles, his very presence on a song can make or break singles and even artists' careers, hip hop radio hosts and commentators can't keep his name out of their mouths (looking at you Charlemagne), he is one of the few hip hop artists (and music artist period) to still be going platinum. He is too culturally relevant for hip hop to not care about him, moreover he has been a significant part of the hip hop scene for 5 years now. Whether he will still be relevant years from now only time will tell, but by all indications he probably will be.

He is by FAR the biggest rapper to ever come out of Canada (and Toronto), the next closest guy to have
matched his popularity in the US is probably Snow, and he was probably more stylistically reggae fusion.
It's not easy to get a Canadian rapper to break out and match his level of success, that simply has never
been done before. Moreover, he is pretty much the only rapper on his OVO Sound imprint. The Toronto scene
isn't going to get huge just because he happens to hail from there.

you missed my argument completely, I'm saying he's not going to be the guy people associate the
genre with 5 years from now, yes he'll probably be relevant, not arguing with you on that, but
the guy who's going to reign supreme is (I bet you) going to be Kendrick Lamar, he has the
background, the sales, the critical reception, and already he has had an immense impact on the
genre as a whole

Umm being culturally relevant and being associated with the genre you stylistically adhere to most go hand
and hand? Have you seen the critical reception Drake has gotten for his albums? Just because everyone 1s
Drake's album here without even having listened to them doesn't mean he doesn't get rave reviews everywhere
else. He's a critical darling, as far as I'm concerned. Drake has been massively impactful as well.
