Man. I just love everything about Tom Waits's persona. He's pure class, while being simultaneously crass and he's the only person that can pull it off the way he does.

Tough call, but this is probably his best album.

went from 3.5 to 4.5 on my second listen.

this and Rain Dogs are so atypical of the 80s. hard to believe this was '83

his wife was a spent piece of used jet trash. made good bloody marys. kept her mouth shut most of the time. had a little Chihuahua named Carlos that had some kind of skin disease and was totally blind. *clears throat*

I've been trying to give 4.5s sparingly, but I'm pretty sure that's what I'm giving this.

i can't go less now. dunno what I was smoking to arrive at a 3.5

this is a genius approach to a genre where you usually essentially know what you're getting.

Yeah, his whole discog is littered with great albums and stylistic changes.
I'm also a big fan of 'The Heart of Saturday Night' (his 2nd album) and 'Bone Machine' and 'Mule Variations' too. I need to hear a lot more of his other albums too.

His first album doesn't do a lot for me. It has well written songs, but they're a bit white bread. Idk. May need to listen to it more.
