This was the first Sepultura album I ever bought and I was blown away by how powerful the sound is. The first thing I noticed was how damn good it sounded. It has to be in the top 3 of Scotty Burns’ best production jobs. Scott Burns was obviously a great producer but what is also apparent from my experience with great Metal albums is that when Andy Wallace does the mixing the productions are even greater. If Scott Burns had Andy Wallace mix more of his albums that combination could have created some of the greatest sounding Death or Thrash albums imaginable. This album has always been confusing for me to categorize though, the riffs and structure of the songs make me feel like it’s Thrash but then the vocal style and heaviness make me think it’s Death Metal. It’s like right on the line so much that you can’t even categorize it Death/Thrash like you can with an album like “Tortured Existence” by Demolition Hammer or “Spectrum Of Death” by Morbid Saint or “Decameron” by Epidemic where you automatically can tell it’s what Death/Thrash is. This album also ages very well and still sounds so fresh and ahead of its time even today. It’s really a near perfect Metal album. Perfect production, great performances, great songwriting, awesome lyrics, great artwork, and a band that’s totally in sync and tight and full of energy you can tell they are in their prime here.

This has some sweet jams, it's just a shame the rest of the album doesn't quite live up to those first few tracks.
