I'm a worship leader and these songs are great, many of them will connect with church/other Christian settings and that's what it's meant for. There's an inconveniencing need for both theologically sound/profound lyrics and immediately accessible music because you're asking a large group of people to corporately engage with a song they've never heard before. Although as a musician or a lover of music, we want excellence in arrangements and songwriting, the goal is to create an environment where people can worship God without a background of musical appreciation/talent.

That's what this is for. It's almost a bit weird to treat it analytically and it's interesting people who don't believe in any of this are giving it a chance... it's undoubtedly going to be disappointing in that regard. It's meant to be hyper-accessible and bare-boned, but Thrice wasn't meant to be...

There is some really interesting music in contemporary Christian worship (although way more in 'Christian' music), but the success of a piece of congregational worship is the song's ability to connect with Christians and provide a platform for them to worship freely.

This will have a really wide audience and will be really well received by the church market, and not so much by anyone else, and I respect the turn he's made but I am relatively disappointed from a musical stand-point. That's okay. This is serving a different purpose than an album created for artistic merit, so I won't treat it like something that needs objective scrutiny...

Exactly this. I was expecting more of a theological and interesting album instead of a worship album.

That's fair. I wasn't expecting that, because he said it was a worship album.

In that regard, I'm quite pleased.

By the way, many moments remind me of The Dear Hunter.

I think there are some super powerful worship tracks on this album. And something I talked about in my review is how he matches the mood of the lyrics with the mood of the music. I mean, he did that in Thrice too. I read somewhere that most Thrice songs started as instrumental tracks, and Kensrue would listen to the song, and write lyrics based on how the music made him feel/what it reminded him of. I think that's super innovative. I got that feel on this record. Like, listen to the ridiculously happy music to "It Is Finished" which is by far the happiest lyrical song on the record, vs. the music of "It's Not Enough"; most people wouldn't even guess those were both the same artist, much less on the same album. That's incredible songwriting regardless of what genre you listen to.

Phil Wickham is still my favorite contemporary Worship songwriter, but I'm definitely interested to see where Dustin goes next with his music. I would love to see him do something more theologically challenging.

^He said he was. I think this shit is awesome. I am not religious in anyway. But I can respect beliefs. I think it's great he's putting some good music into a genre that sucks.

Never been a fan of popular religions, let alone worship music... but I have respect for Dustin, so I might check this out.

Dude, I just said I might check it out. And it's not just the lyrics... this is a christian worship album. It affects the whole vibe. Nothing wrong with that, I simply said I've never been a fan of it.

Suffering Servant might be my favorite. The translation of my name (Ian) is Yahweh.
