This has a lot of their best moments imo, especially in Scavenger and Flesh And the Power It Holds, it also has Voice of the Soul. That said, it also has a lot of song-writing flaws like riffs that literally come out of nowhere (middle of Story To Tell, ugh) and things like that which make it feel uneven as a whole. Symbolic is probably their best for me too ... It's for sure their most well-crafted, though there are days when I like the more raw and atmospheric approach of Human slightly more.

Good news! I have a soft spot for Leprosy (never thought I’d say that) but yeah Symbolic is perfection personified & Human is awesome too. This does feel a little clumsy at times but it’s very ambitious & I respect that (not that Symbolic or ITP weren’t).

TSOP and ITP deserve 4.5 averages too...I'd say Symbolic is that rare album that deserves a 4.6

If Symbolic didn’t exist I wouldn’t have be on a DM binge this year, truly a game changer. I honestly couldn’t believe what I was hearing, the phrase ‘blowing your mind’ was given a whole new meaning.

1:40 into Story to Tell bends my soul like it's nothing. Clearly subjective, this album has exceptional emotional power on me. It sounds desperate when I feel down but then it sounds empowering and motivational when I'm fine. Really evergreen.
I get why some find it disjointed and too indulgent but for me it's not the case at all. It's hectic but I find it always coherent and tasteful. It never tires me because it flows so well between many passages, it's really like an adventure.
Very special album to me, if it wasn't already clear ahah. One of my hardest 5s

Not tech death but have you listened to Rivers of Nihil?

Yeah dude The Faceless first two albums aren't overly wankery at all - I don't see the problem with those two at all.
And agreed on Origin - I liked them when I was younger but holy fucking shit they are impossible to listen to.
Psycroptic's Sceptor of the Ancients is really good, so is Spawn of Possession and Necrophagist imo even though you can make the argument for over technicality but whatevs.

The concept of tech-death confuses me... I can’t tell what tech-death is by just listening to it, where’s the line? Does someone sit there anyalyaing how techy something is & giving it a score? ‘Nope, this album didn’t reach the tech points threshold therefore it doesn’t count.’
For the record I seem to like Gorguts & Ulcerate but I couldn’t tell you how much the technicality improves the listen, for me.
