Not at all surprised a lot of CC fans don't know about Gorguts. You can literally buy Cannibal Corpse merch at Hot Topic. That should tell you everything you need to know about how plebeian a large swath of their "fanbase" is.

The best part about that tour is just how much better those opening two bands are. I like Mayhem and CC, but goddamn gorguts and Blood incantation are so much better

Yeah, I specifically went to see guts and BI. Blood Incantation's set was like under 25 mins and Gorguts only played the osdm stuff, so I felt a little teased.

they’re fun… but that’s about it. All of their music, that I’ve heard at least, sounds the same

there are good reasons why CC are the most popular oldschool dm band to this day. A lot of it has to do with their early infamy, their accessible and in-your face branding and music and fact that they never really change their formula much album to album which results in diehard fans never really being driven away or being disappointed by sudden changes in their music. They are a pretty consistent and singular entity in extreme music and lots of their fans don't really even care to look for similar bands, not to mention more experimental ones like gorguts. i dont think CC are overrated, just very consistent and popular.

At least none of us have 2'd any Gorguts or Atheist album like Tundra aka "Mr. I've never been borked by a woman."

it really is fitting that his studio is called menegroth, the thousand caves, cuz marston's mixing prowess is akin to that of some kinda cryptic thaumaturge with a penchant for esoteric knowledge, could probably concoct a brew that boosts the low end response in your ears and call it some shit like "dour pig tonic"

Mixed well, absolutely. The kick drum could do with a bit less click and a little more meat though, if we're gonna split hairs. My hifi system highlights a slight lack of heft on the bottom end here. Nonetheless, the stereo imaging and overall mixdown really are impeccable. I'm gonna dig at Marston's work on the dials too much, he does amazing stuff.

Blood incantation are good but they're the overrated ones in my mind. Just one of the current overhyped dm bands. I'll take mayhem over them every time

Starspawn is somehow from 2016 but it completely deserves any hype.
