for anyone who hasn't heard Bobby Barnett's solo album "Little Wounds", it's an essential listen, especially after hearing the new Captain, We're Sinking (several of those songs are redone and the themes from that album are clearly tied into this new one)

New Album is a solid 4, it will probably be a grower though
Little Wounds is so so good

Hearing the evolution of the arrangements for both versions of Hunting Trip/Little Wounds/The King of No Man is blowing my mind

gonna have to give that solo record another spin, I heard it once a few years ago and was left super underwhelmed
didn't even realize some of these new songs on this were revamped arrangements of stuff from that, it's piqued my curiosity again
|
| |
Hunting Trip has maybe the best lyrics he's ever written
Shame there's such a clear quality gap between the sings circa 2015 and the newer ones but w/e album is great

After only one listen. I can say that my doubts/fears are at least a bit relieved. Obviously the lyrics haven't had a chance to sink in for the most part, but the guitar and drum work are phenomenal. Tracks that jumped out to me on first listen are: Cannonless, TFIC pt.2, Crow, and the title track.

yeesh, the reaction to the new album on here was harsh

Album Rating: 3.5
yea i fell asleep and it was sitting at a 4 average, i woke up and it was at a 3.4 and had 3 1.0 soundoffs

Album Rating: 4.5
woah yeah I thought it was gonna hover around 3.9/3.8 but 3.4?...damn

ahh it was the discord crew with grouchy zip leading the charge and impressionable TVC following suit
|
| |
idk dudes, the new album is really, really shit. i thought zip was just being a cynical ass, but the new one is about as awful as he says it was.
impressionable TVC is accurate though, considering he no shit listened to both albums for the first time last night just because he saw me and zip ripping on it and wanted to get a piece of the action.

hahah I wasn't even there and I could've guessed that's what happened. I think you guys are overreacting though like how can you 5 this and 1 their new album? they are very similar in sound and even if the production isnt the greatest there's nothing offensively bad about the album that warrants such a score. like there's 3 or 4 tracks on here that are EXACTLY like this album even if, in your opinion, they might not hit as hard....idk man just dont't get the 1s
|
| |
there's barely anything similar between these two records, though. the only real similarities they bare is that it kinda sounds like its from the same band.

it's very obviously from the same band. idk just doubting your rating choice because you're usually pretty consistent about it. I could honestly understand why people would 2/2.5 this but giving this the absolute lowest score seems petty to me

I seriously can't even fathom the perspective that the new one is such a disappointing departure that it warrants a 1, especially if you 4+'d this
seems more than a bit contrarian for the sake of bringing the new average down
but hey, you're all succeeding, so props, I guess
EDIT: Con ninja'd me, what he said [2]
|
| |
realistically, probably a 1.5. but I'll stand by the fact that this album and the new one are nothing alike. at all. and what the new one offers is just about every horrible songwriting cliche offered by RFC Records.
also, im the last person who would rate against an album to be contrarian or to tank the average. i'm just really disgusted by the new record lmao. i'd write a review, but id rather focus on positive write ups.
