They were great once. It's just that:

-Lars never bothered to expand his technique
-Kirk's solos blow (even if Enter Sandman is a guilty pleasure)
-James always does the same riffs over and over
-Losing Cliff hindered their sound
-The band's pretty much sucks when it comes to songwriting

Still, Ride the Lighting is a masterpiece. And Kill 'Emma All comes close

Master of Puppets is a contender for greatest metal album ever.

Agree with the part of lars, he was never a proefficient or interesting drummer and he got worse in the 90's. But James and Kirk are good despite of not being the best, but they made some nice solos and guitar work. Album owns hard cuz its compelity and the explosive nature of a lot of songs contained here. Still Ride The Lightning is the jewel in the crown. I enjoyed a big part of the material ( even I can enjoy a bunch of songs of load and reload). Fuck st anger and that lulu shit.

It's obviously not Master of Puppets, but I don't see too many flaws in this record... (Other than some pointless fillers.)

Bass is the only flaw of this record. But they remaster this album so I forgive them and my rating got higher. Drums, lyrics and guitar work are excellent here, more complex and in some some songs like the self titled the work is intense and interesting.

By the way, first time I hear people complaining about MOP, there are no flaws on that records ( lepper messiah, damage inc, sanatorium, the self titled, battery are perfect in every sense )
