@octagon: I recommend waiting till it's late at night and you're in a dark room with all the lights pitch black. all the monitors. let the melancholy wash over you like a tidal wave. that's the best way to experience something like this.

dont really see this overtaking jar of flies for me since i think that ep is outright the best release of the whole grunge movement but this still big slaps

I just love how beautifully ugly it is. It's harrowing and tough to listen to at times but I think that works to its significance for me.

So in the mid 90’s, Alice In Chains was one of my favorite bands. But as of today, I prefer the Duvall fronted version better. As a matter of fact, my top 5 AIC songs are all off the last 3 records. Hot take all day boys…

Both eras have their share of bangers, that's for sure. I think this would be my ranking today:
Dirt (5)
S/t (4.5)
BGWTB (4.5)
Jar of Flies (4.3)
Facelift (4.2)
TDPDH (3.8)
Sap (3.7)
Rainier Fog (3.5)

The post Layne stuff is solid as hell but i'm still taking everything with Layne over it

I’m not comparing the quality of the music because you obviously can’t. The Layne era was incredible. I grew tired of the sound though after 30 years. And the album that held up the most for me over time is easily Jar Of Flies - it’s really the only one I’ll throw on every now and then.
I pick the Duvall era today simply because it’s fresher.
