it's not a dramatic loss of composure, not in her voice or the production, which are both gentle and tight. i mention her voice is a composed one. it's just the lyrics really, which in turn spoil the great things happening around them.

in a sense i guess there's no 'loss' of composure, as she maintains the same attitude throughout. it just gets grating because she does. she gets swept away with her own histrionics; every song is oh so melodramatic and woe is me that i find myself turning away from it, eager for a change of tune.

the production on a few of the tracks here are so suited to some more liberating, push-on lyrics, but they're tied to this anchor of darkness and self pity which stops the album from developing (and it could have done - and been brilliant). you don't notice the tracks changing because of a holding things together - i don't notice them changing out of a running eyeliner kind of muddying together.

though, as mentioned, i'm a heartless bastard.

im fine with depressing and dark albums, but sometimes her lyrics just get whiney, and i fucking hate it when people write melodramatic albums with lyrics about relationships (Love Let Me Go, anyone?). needs more clever observations/introspection without all the cliche "poor me" lyrics.

well put AC. personally i'd like a bit more variation, but if there isn't going to be that try to hold

off on all the drowning, never being born wishes, broken chests, bloodstained clouds et al.

for what it's worth, if i had these fancy new staff decimal points, i would have rated it a 3.7 or 8.

i do like it a lot, it's just a shame because it could have been a lot better.

I also prefer the EP version of Youth

Need to give this a bit more time to decide what I think

I guess it's a little post-rocky, but I consider it indie folk for sure. This is seriously my favourite album of the year so far. Sputnik needs to get on this.

i guess the presence of vocals at the forefront and use of acoustic guitar makes people jump to an indie folk label. but the instrumentation in this is absolutely post-rock. have no doubt it would be labelled as that if it didn't have vocals in it, even though vocals has nothing to do with whether or not something is post-rock. sounds really good, mind you. i might buy it i just wonder if the style might get a bit samey throughout the album and multiple listens.

Fair enough, I see where you're coming from. If I ever see this on vinyl I will totally buy this.

This is an utterly delightful response

I find your writing exceptional sir, and your opinions both articulate and accurate

Very cool review, I enjoyed reading it a whole lot! I haven't heard much by this band (besides one or two songs), but my friend likes it, so I'm thinking of giving this a try
