Ah I see. Still it's pretty sweet that you could play that. Almost makes me want to pick up my guitar and start practicing. Almost...

And good to hear you liked this. This is probably my favorite pieces of music of all time. Definitely give Rachmaninioff's other stuff a listen since it's all quality stuff.

I've been getting closer and closer to getting my hands on the music for this. The most difficult piece I prob played on the piano was Piano Concerto in D Minor by Bach. It took me a half a year to finish the first movement.

haven't heard bach's piano concerto but you must be a hell of a pianist to consider taking this on!

i've been tempted to learn the 2nd movement, which doesn't sound so hard except for the end, but i figure that time can be better used adding other pieces to my repertoire

Before I even attempted any piano concerto, I primarily studied many different ages of classical music. Baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary were my classical genres I most looked into. Once I mastered Rachmaninoff's Prelude in C# Minor, I started the concerto. That was just me, though.

I mean of course, if you're considering trying this then I'm sure you were classically trained within the different eras. I'm actually learning Prelude in C# minor at the moment too, but it's really not that difficult a piece, at least in comparison to this concerto (I think, haven't tried to play this but it just sounds difficult).

I think there are other tougher repertoire pieces I'd choose over a concerto, just because I don't have a backing orchestra (obviously lol)

I know that this Piano Concerto has also been constructed for two pianos as well. Piano one is soloist and Piano two is orchestra.

yeah, one of my favorite scenes in nodame cantabile (an anime that heavily uses this concerto) is the dual piano rendition of this

Finding duo piano versions of the concerto aren't very easy to find on youtube. It took me a good 30 minutes to find the 1st movement.

I found it. This is the full two pianos version of it. This video along with the audio should be the best out there. :]

Awesome, thanks for the help!

Actually, mind answering a question about Prelude in C# Minor? Considering agitato isn't really a tempo, I was wondering how fast you play that section. Usually I play it around 144 bpm (for a quarter/ crotchet). But playing the cascading chords section at that speed doesn't sound fast enough at all.

What do tempo do you play it at? I think the pre-chord agitato section reaches about 180 bpm but this is merely a guess

I can play that section cleanly anywhere between 170 and 180 on metronome, if that helps you. A good starting speed would be around 150 and 160, then pick up the pace.

by that section, do you mean the whole agitato section (e.g. that chromatic melody + the chord section) or do you mean the chord section in particular? it sounds to me like most interpretations have a general accelerando starting around 150 and ending at 180 by the chord section

in any case, i'll keep that in mind! thanks for the help! only about 36 bpm left to go haha

You mean the whole agitato section? Oh. From the beginning, I start out around 80 and then I slow accelerate to about 170 or faster on the chord section, if that's more specific.

No problemo, mi amigo.

It doesn't take too long if you're patient. For a long time this was my favorite piece to perform for people. Many times it blew them away.

yeah definitely, there's definitely something impressive sounding about it. speed + romantic era expression is a killer combo, if you can manage both.

what's your new favorite piece to perform?

Mussorgsky huh? I don't think I'm familiar with any of his work. Is that a good palce to start?

@Ecnal, yeah piano's definitely awesome, though it took me about 10 years of playing to really appreciate it. But guitar rules too
