I feel like the balancing act sounds like a dramatic play, whereas this is like a film. really cool stuff.

The writing here is so much more focused than on The Balancing Act. On TBA I feel like a lot of the times he was just writing for the sake of writing, to get things off his chest. Here, every song has a specific purpose and the lyrics reflect that. He even acknowledges this on The Beast:

"I got lectured on the matter
That my topics are myopic, non-sequitur and scattered
He uses big words complex with all the patterns
But maybe it's for me and not you"

Honestly this record gets better and better with every listen. His writing is now a lot more natural. There are a few moments on TBA and TAOD where he's doing this ridiculous rhyme scheme and it feels like he's choosing words just BECAUSE they fit the scheme, not really because they're the best fit for what he's trying to say. Here, he still has the crazy rhyme schemes, but the word choices are a lot more cohesive and matured.

yeah i was quick to give it a 5 as well and i'll probably drop the score in time but i'm currently enamoured by this.

a long winter, the beast, melancholia, seven devils, and russian roulette are my favourites.

why was dts super meh

I can't really explain. It just didn't feel very clever, and I think Onry's rapping is pretty boring. I know I'm in the minority though.

I actually agree with you. I don't think I would listen to DTS if it wasn't for Zavala's production, whereas I know I'd listen to Sadistik over pretty much any beats.

lyrics >> beats yo.

well, i mean dts have pretty awesome lyrics with a lot of cool little pop-cult easter eggs for people who listen closely - they even reference harry potter, so they're pretty much the coolest cats around.

that said, sadistik's words are very poignant, especially at the end of petrichor

I do prefer the lyricism here to DTS, to be honest. I just need time to let the beats sink in.

i'm definitely not listening to this for the beats. i find this much more atmospheric than something like dts, and that's kind of the point, because the atmosphere in songs like 'melancholia' help to make his words all the more emotive.

I wouldn't listen to something like this exclusively for the beats either. I just feel like the music isn't captivating enough to match the awesome lyricism, at least on the first listen.

everything seems to just kind of fly by upon first listen, but there's actually a lot of cool little nuances you'll pick up on if you keep listening.

murder of crows might still be his best song. seven devils is right behind it though

the beast is really good, the other 2 I'm not yet sold on. I mean they're good, I just don't feel those tracks are top 3 on this album.
