"And his excuse is he did it as a joke?"
I don't find it hard to believe that he really is stupid enough for that to be true.
'You don't just sieg heil and yell white power and then be like "ope, I was just wrong."'
Isn't it though? Isn't making a genuine apology and effort to learn/change the punishment for saying dumb/ignorant stuff? (assume, for the sake of argument that it was, in fact, a dumb ignorant joke and that he *is* genuinely regretful)

I just dont buy the whole "it was a joke" shtick. He has a history of making extremely questionable remarks and I think he let the cat out of the bag.
There is no way to know if his apology is genuine. Im not buying it because I really don't believe that it was a joke. All we have to go off of is his past behavior.
But it doesn't matter what you or I think anyways. The venue and concert organizers have the ultimate say in whether a band is going to perform there or not. As I stated, you say racist shit, your shows are gonna get canceled. It's called logic and repercussions. Saying "cancel culture" at this point unironically is just a red flag and a cheap conservative platitude to be used when most if not all other arguments have been lost.

Honestly, I have no interest in watching the Pantera reunion shows. Hell, it's not a reunion in the first place. I understand that there are people who say "oh, well it's just a tribute to the Abbott brothers and their legacy!" But to me, that's absolute bullshit. Why did Phil wait for both brothers to die before he kicked this whole thing off? Probably because they still had bad blood with him, and now he can grave-rob their collective legacy for profit. Honestly, I think this goes beyond the questionable behavior he's exhibited over time... there's something even more messed up with this reunion imo

If Phil's voice was still in prime condition it might be a different story but they literally abridged Cemetery Gates because the full version has high notes he can't hit anymore lmao

Afaik Anselmo has NEVER sung the high notes live.

I've seen a few 90s recordings where he gets close enough for jazz at least on the verse/prechorus, he was def pushing himself beyond any realistic live capability with the falsetto stuff even in the recording booth tho yeah

10000%, so much more charismatic and forceful than that overbaked grr-i'm-a-toughie affect on most nu-pantera tracks, part of why I always loved NOLA is that it felt like a matured version of that earlier style, more melodic and dynamic
