Them playing live without Spencer was better than their self-titled album, so I'm inclined to believe this is better, too.
That said, I don't enjoy Periphery and I'm unlikely to enjoy this, either.

Periphery is definitely hit or miss.
And they miss a lot.

These guys should be an instrumental, like Animals As Leaders. Spencers vocals just fucking suck. He ruins this band.
The talent these guys have doesnt need to be ruined by high pitched off time vocals followed by shitty fry screams that sound weak.

they should just fire spencer
this is great

Eh, I need the vocals personally.

These guys sure get a lot of hate based on Meshuggah comparisons... what people don't see is that they're a total rip-off of Sikth.
HOWEVER... since I loved Sikth and this instrumental doesn't feature annoying vocals to distract the listener from its true strength (technicality and musicianship), I'll go ahead and give it a 4.
A fucking shame no instrumental version of PII came out (although it would be weaker than this, for sure).

is it against the book of elitist to like this band

No other ’djent’ act realises the juxtaposition of ethereal electronica with detonative onslaughts of dense, electrifying riffage (while having PLENTY in the way of pathos) quite as perfectly as this album does. The crystalline chord progressions sprawling across everywhere in ’Racecar’ is some of the most unearthly shit I've ever heard. Sends chills down my spine like nothing else. and boy, does the main riff in ’Insomnia’ absolutely explode.
Anyway. This album is a work of pure fantastical, utterly futuristic elation. But at the same time it’s among some of the most (oddly?) nostalgic music I’ve ever heard. I don't have any clue how to describe the emotions it invokes in me...
Also the Tron Legacy-seque neon logo on the album cover lends the music quite an immense aesthetic appeal. Which always helps.

Racecar is too fucking good it’s honestly unreal

so, I gave Periphery some negatives on their instrumental in one of my reviews previously... I was completely wrong. This album is killer
|
| |
They're all extremely talented musicians. People just don't seem to like spencer.
|
| |
his vocals aren’t that bad, it’s just that the instruments really show their technicality when the vocals are taken out
